Announcing: The By the People Fund

Image
Friend -- $200 million. That's what Republican-aligned special interests have pledged to spend on the 2010 election. Just to put that in context, that's nearly $40 million more than every interest group spent on the 2008 presidential election -- combined. When our administration and this movement decided to take on the special interests, we knew we were making a choice. And the consequences are clear. These groups have fought us at every turn in our struggle for change, and now they're trying to drown out our voices -- and our accomplishments -- with their campaign cash this fall. We're not going to sit back and let that happen. Today, Organizing for America is announcing the By the People Fund with the goal of getting 3 million citizen donations to fuel our grassroots campaign for the upcoming election. Please donate $5 today and help us take back this election from the corporate interests. With our By the People Fund , we're going to make a statem

White paint puts stop signs in better focus

I must commend Mayor Joe Walter and the streets department of Watkinsville for painting the LARGE white stripes on the roads to remind drivers  exactly where to stop around the streets in the subdivisions of Watkinsville. Once this summer or actually spring I had to read the riot act to a couple of kids who ran a street sign in a small motorized vehicle and would occasionally run out into a busier street without even pausing at the stop sign. The only downside I can see is when someone is parked on the curb too near the intersection and you have to wait to take a turn or otherwise have the car coming from the other direction make their turn.  This is a small price to pay for safety. Patience, people, patience. Now if I can just keep the vandals from swiping the formerly attached street signs from atop the stop signs, everything would be hunky dory in my suburban paradise. How about that wind storm the other day? Took out some trees and blew lots of limbs down. I would think it w

Not to overly politicize the wonderful Rotarians, but our Congressman Dr. Paul Broun would be better served using their four way test than the one he uses to keep Federal dollars out of our district Rotary Club honors volunteers || OnlineAthens.com

County cuts hours for center, recycling || OnlineAthens.com

I have always maintained that the recycling service in Oconee County - outside of municial Watkinsville - is not needing any people working at the drop off centers and should be opened and unattended 24/7 especially in this hot weather. County cuts hours for center, recycling || OnlineAthens.com

Bob Smith now wants to sell you a discounted golf course

Although the steep discount makes this a juicy offer, I would not recommend purchasing any leisure time real estate in this economy, and although it looks great on the web, I would not want to be saddled with having to revive a golf course with the water wars unsettled and it will probably cost close to the purchase price to get it up and running again. Your morning jolt: Right-wing will target Sanford Bishop — just like it targeted her, says Shirley Sherrod

Will you sign Barack's birthday card, with me?

Image
Friend -- Every year, our family tries to come up with a fun way to wish Barack a happy birthday. And this August 4th, when he turns 49, I have something new in mind. This has been a big -- and hectic -- year for him. After signing the Affordable Care Act and Wall Street reform into law -- and completing his first year as president -- I think it's safe to say we will remember it for a long time. And I know full well how much he credits this movement, and the work of supporters like you, for the change that we've accomplished. So I'm putting together a birthday card that I would like you to sign. Together with other Organizing for America supporters -- and me, Malia, Sasha, and Bo -- we'll wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we're ready to take on the year ahead alongside him. Will you wish Barack a happy birthday with me? This year also brought a lot of surprises -- some good and some bad. Supporters like you have helped him ma

Davison to run for A/CC Tax Commissioner?

Word on the streets is that soon-to-be-former Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davison will be running for A/CC Tax Commissioner, a job that Nancy Denson just gave up to run for Heidi's current job. Mitch Schrader, the current acting Tax Commissioner, is running as well and should face formidable opposition in Davision.

Oconee Democrats select State Convention delegates at Caucus Saturday

Image
The Oconee County Democratic Committee selected three delegates to State Convention in Athens in August during their caucus Saturday afternoon at Krimson Kafe in Watkinsville. Vicky Moody is already a member of the State Delegation, and Robert Wyatt and Jonathan Veit will be joining her along with Ann Stoneburner. Tony Glenn and yours truly as alternates.  The secret ballots were tabulated by Vicky and Ann, who is the assistant chair of the committee but graciously chaired this meeting. Many discussions of the recent primary, on both sides of the ballot, as well as education and other topics were discussed soon thereafter. Though we may be small in number, we are strong in spirit and opinion. It was good to see longtime members Herb and Myrna West return to the fold for the meal and meeting at the Watkinsville lunch time eatery. The Oconee County Democratic Committee does not always have enough members to meet or make quorums as was the case for their most recent meeting prior to t
