The Oconee County Board of Education continues to stumble through the process of replacing Tom Breedlove's Post 5 slot on the Board of Education. They have decided to embargo the release of the names of those who want to be considered until after the deadline has passed, despite the names having already been published in another local blog. Dr. Jackson himself said he was hoping to not release the list until the deadline had passed as it would somehow be unfair to those who have yet to include their names, believing there are people who have yet to include their names before the deadline. Once again this smacks of elitism and the old "we know secrets we are not going to tell you yet because you can't handle the truth." Chairmans of the Board of Commissioners of Oconee County will come and go, and this is time for current chair G. Melvin Davis to go ahead and resign after the revelation of a second secret meeting in December of 2008 before the first one revealed at the start of this calender year. The whole stink about the attempted raises by the Oconee County Board of Education now threatens to smear the careers of not only chairman and Barberitos co-owner David Weeks, but also State Representative Bob Smith for being a turncoat if nothing else. To completely understand this local version of a secret cabal, you need a scorecard at the very least. Essentially Board of Commissioners chair G. Melvin Davis called meetings in December of 2008 without proper public notice and this is a crime for which he needs to do the time no longer as a public servant. Esteemed Watkinsville City Council member and public relations professional Brian Brodrick wrote an interesting letter to the Editor of the Athens Banner-Herald earlier this week deriding the tactics employed by Athens FAQ in their battle against the location of NBAF at the intersection of Whitehall and Milledge. He did have a valid point about the proximity of the State Botanical Gardens, and I would hope that they would never be disturbed. For proper perspective, be sure to click on the links to the original letter and the comments, but please ignore the meaningless attacks on Brodrick and his family. They deserve much better than that. An Oconee County woman is anonymously complaining to the media about a childbirth video shown to her 2nd grade child in the public school system. I understand why this woman wants to remain anonymous: she would be laughed at and ridiculed by every neighbor and at the Publix; and her child would be teased non-stop not just on the playground. While I have only seen the bits of the video provided by Fox 5 thanks to a principal's son, I know the miracle of childbirth up close and personal. It is an awesome experience I would recommend to almost everyone, breeder and non-breeder alike. I grant the parent in question the right to remove her child from an eye opening and honest view of reproduction. I have a second grader. He is reading Peter Pan and remarking on what a good book it is. I am in no hurry to have him grow up either. He asks questions about coming out of mother all the time.
