Bobby Saxon calls on Congressman to refund taxpayer money

Bobby Saxon calls on Congressman to refund taxpayer money ATHENS, GA – Bobby Saxon, Democratic nominee for the Georgia 10th Congressional District, calls on Congressman Paul Broun, Jr. to refund taxpayer money he wastefully spent on self promoting mailers. "I am shocked and dismayed with today’s news that Congressman Broun would be so careless with taxpayer money. He has regularly voted against the interests of hardworking Georgia families; voting against critical programs for needy children, benefits for veterans, and against stronger law enforcement for child pornography, all the while spending our tax dollars promoting his name,” Saxon said. “Today I call on Paul Broun, Jr. to refund the $562,000 of hard earned taxpayer money that he spent on shameless self promotion. Congressman Broun's hypocritical position on government spending illustrates the need for true positive change in the 10th District. If elected, unlike Congressman Broun, I will provide the responsible leader...

More reasons to vote for Bobby Saxon

Dr. Paul Broun, Jr. wastes his office budget in record time on franking privileges and assorted ephemera. Here is the AJC's take on his fiscal irresponsibility. Really one can only expect more ridiculous behavior coming out about Broun given his track record of not being allowed to practice medicine in a hospital, flip-flopping on the issues that matter most, and all that other muckety-muck dredged up by Barry Fleming during the Primary .

Independent congressional candidacy of Jefferson's James P. Mason will effect Broun, Saxon, Fleming (photo of Barry and hometown museum sign on I-20)

Tire store marketing employee James P. Mason of Jefferson intends to enter his name on the ballot of the 10th district U.S. Congressional election here in Athens (and Augusta and north to the border), and I think his long shot independent candidacy will have equal effect on the Republican or Democratic candidates. I salute the former Marine who served his country in Afghanistan who has taken on the established parties. We shall see how effectively young Mr. Mason markets himself in the rather disjointed district stretching from the Central Savannah River Area to the Mountains of North Carolina with a dip in Watkinsville and Washington-Wilkes. Only one thing is for certain, Nicholson resident Bobby Saxon should have talked to his fellow Jackson County veteran in Mason and figured out why (or at least what is prompting him) he is going to run. Conventional political wisdom would prescribe that the Mason wild card will siphon off some votes from both sides of the aisle, but probably hur...

Congressman Broun won't save his hometown Ag Center

I vomited in my own mouth when I heard NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM's Tim Bryant being manipulated by State Senator and Congressional wannabe Barry Fleming today on his Fleming's many arrows and barbs, but it set the tone for the nasty words rising faster than the gas prices. Fleming did blast Broun about not wanting to save the Ag Research Center in Athens. Nice try Barry. The J. Phil Campbell Jr center is only in Watkinsville, not Athens, and if you think there is a big stink between folks from Augusta and Athens in the Whitehead meltdown last year, wait to you hear some folks from Oconee and Clarke going at it. Broun won't go to bat to try and get some congressional pork to save the agriculture facility. That pretty much decides it that I cannot vote for Broun ever again. If you are going to play on the team, you need to know the rules The gist of Fleming's phlegm this time was that Broun wants to do bong hits with your kids and sell porn pictures of them as well. Of cour...

Reflections of a Caucus to select Georgia's Democratic National Convention delegates for Obama and Clinton

Anyone else note a hint of irony in making people who chose to come to the caucus to display a picture ID after we fought so hard against Republican lawmakers enforcing photo ID to vote? I understand why we had to do it. Georgia State chair Jane Kidd and Terry Holley did a fine job in a tough thankless position. I saw a few Oconee Democrats, including Herb and Myrna West and Pat Priest. Mike Hamby collected ballots. Obama supporters met in the lunch room; Clinton supporters including Becky Vaughn voted in the auditorium. The credentials line took forever to certify all the caucus attendees. I did not have my voter registration card and was not given the yellow credentials card either, but Terry Holley hooked me up and I voted before the speeches were commenced. Gwen O'Looney actively campaigned to the point of bringing some of her tenants to the caucus, and it paid off as she won along with Athens attorney and forthcoming local Sports Hall of Fame inductee Ken Dious. Dr. David Jarr...

State Senator/Talk radio host to challenge Broun, Fleming for 10th District GOP nod

Add Nancy Schaefer's name to the list of candidates for the U.S. Congressional seat currently held by Athens' and Oconee's own Dr. Paul Broun, Jr. Barry Fleming of Augusta is generally considered the establishment Republican favorite and Schaefer a right-wing nut job making Broun's eccentricities seem main stream. She is a Baptist reactionary out of Toccoa, oops Turnerville. She is an utter buffoon with fringe views on a variety of topics ranging from the North American Union (huh? - oh yes, yet another right wing fantasy) to Women's Reproductive freedom and other issues making her election an absolute uncertainty. However, her candidacy does doom Broun's chance at getting renominated, at least that would be the general political common sense at this point. Perhaps Bobby Saxon can start raising some real money now ?

All four seats are up for election in 2008

Saw Oconee County Board of Commissioners member Don Norris at the downtown Athens post office this morning and he sounded initially just as confused as I was about which of the four seats on the Oconee County Board of Commissioners will be up for election in 2008. After a couple of early morning mistakes, he thought that Post 2 and 3 will be up for election in November of 2008 (and in June if we need a primary, a much more likely scenario on the Republican side than the Democratic side in heavily G.O.P. Oconee County). That would be for the Bogart's Norris and Farmington's Margaret Hale currently occupied slots in the election. No word from him or Margaret if they are going to seek re-election or not. Norris did seem somewhat puzzled when I told him Jay Hanley had formed an exploratory committee. "For what?," he puzzled before engaging someone else in line. Turns out according to the Oconee County Board of Elections that all four seats are up for election, so this i...

Jay Hanley forms online exploratory committee for County Commission race in 2008

The political adolescence of Jay Hanley continues online at Facebook at the very least. 14 friends have joined the son of former Watkinsville City Council member John Hanley in his group. According to his Facebook group " Yes, the group name speaks for itself. In response to requests from friends, I am exploring or thinking about a run for an Oconee County Commission post in 2008. I understand there may be one or more open seats on the Commission in 2008 and I would only run for an open seat. I'm not interested in running against an incumbent. I did that once when I ran for Watkinsville City Council. It's very difficult. Plus, I like and respect the current board members ." We post this only as a well placed warning shot across the bow to all the other folks who might consider running for the Board of Commissioners, and I would certainly support a few more taxpaying and homeowning candidates for the Oconee County Commission. I wonder which seat Jay thinks will be ope...
