What a Chuck Horton Chairmanship of Oconee Board of Commissioners would mean

There has always seem to be some kind of division in local politics that seems to boil down to: There is a city next to us called Athens, and we can cooperate with those in Clarke County for our mutual prosperity We will ignore Athens in everything, and everyone who lives there can go to Hell Obviously this is an oversimplification of Oconee County, Georgia politics and its perception regionally, but there has always been a very palatable contempt of all things Clarke County in the current leadership of Oconee County Board of Commission. I think this attitude of being an uncooperative neighbor has been to the detriment of all concerned. The University of Georgia is the economic engine that fuels at least the five counties surrounding Clarke, despite what some of the politicians in those counties wish to believe. Chuck Horton has been the Police Chief for the University of Georgia. He does not kowtow to Dr. Michael Adams or Mayor Heidi Davison or anyone else. He is a pragmatic pro

Looking for help

The Oconee County Historical Society and the DAR will be sponsoring a float in the Watkinsville Christmas Parade December 4.  We plan to have people in historical costume accompanying the float to hand out 'old fashioned' candies and a flyer.  The flyer will have information about the society, some historical information about Christmas trees and we hope information about the upcoming campaign to restore the chairs in the auditorium at Central School House. We need folks willing to help with the candy and fliers.  Do not worry about the 'historical costume' part.  The history that the society covers goes from the beginnings of settlement in the area up to the present day so thinking of a costume might not be as difficult as you think.  If you need help with ideas we will help you figure out something.  Please let me know if you are willing to join in the fun. Peggy

Message from Russell Edwards about his immediate future

Thank you!  Thank you for having the courage to believe that together we can move mountains.  We took on what turned out to be a Herculean task, and, unfortunately, our side was not strong enough to defeat the incredible anti-Democratic tide.  I still love Georgia though, and am honestly excited about the task of rebuilding a viable opposition party in the South. My immediate plans: I'll take a quick vacation to a Spanish-speaking country to brush up my skills, and then work to build more bridges to the Latino community. I'll take the GA Bar Exam at the end of February, and I have no plans on leaving Athens.  I'll continue fighting to remove what I believe is an illegal requirement on GA's Voter Registration Application which discourages citizens from registering to vote.  If you're interested in reading a brief primer on the subject, Click Here. In the end, all candidates are nothing without the great people who stand beside them.  I feel honored to have s

Oconee County should embrace cycling

Oconee County should approach cycling as an economic and tourism issue, as well as a public safety issue. I am always happy to give cyclists the shoulder of the road and make sure there is no approaching traffic from the other side before passing them with plenty of room. I also have no problems with cyclists going two abreast when biking in a pair or pack. We need to build stand-alone bike trails and paths off the road and make narrow roads like Simonton Bridge/Whitehall have paved adjacent bike lanes as a means to prevent the road from unnecessarily expanding. What opponents to cycling fail to realize, this is not a liberal-conservative issue, nor a Republican-Democratic issue, nor even a Bike Athens-Oconee County issue, but instead it is a legitimate concern for all people who drive a vehicle or pedal a bike. It goes well beyond traditional political or social divisions with just as many conservative Republican cyclists as there as liberal Democratic bike enthusiasts. People pedal f

Line was 10+ deep at the Property Tax Office in Oconee County Courthouse

Today is the last day to pay your property taxes at the Oconee County Courthouse without paying a penalty. The long lines reflected the last second nature of many of the taxpayers wanted not to part with one cent any earlier than absolutely necessary.  Once again the wonderful folks in the basement of the Courthouse were more than willing to accept payment quickly and pleasantly.

Subject: TONHS October 2010 Meeting Notes from Fred Dear Fellow High Shoalers,                                                                                          November 14, 2010   Speed Bumps on Hillsboro continued to be a leading issue for the town.     Oconee County is about to resurface Hillsboro; the county expressed that they did not want the town to have speed bumps along Hillsboro.    The Council discussed this issue extensively at their October meeting and had another meeting on November 1 st   to continue discussion.    County Chair Melvin Davis came to the November 1 meeting to listen to the council and discuss their desire for traffic calming devices along Hillsboro.   Council members continue to spearhead repairs in the park and at town hall.    Jason is leading work to complete the gutters on the town hall and David has another park work day to fix some items in the park.    Violet is leading an effort to write a grant to expand the trails in the city park.   Fa
