From: "psommer" ; psommer@bellsouth.net Date: May 1, 2013 11:38:24 AM EDT To: "'psommer'" psommer@bellsouth.net Subject: monday's past meets present event Thanks to all of you who came to Monday's event.  Someone counted 70 people there.  The students gave us a lot of ideas and things to think about.  It was clear they had learned a lot and really appreciated what we have in our community.  Here is a very brief summary of their presentation Final project presentations: a.   Watkinsville logo/website: This group had several ideas for a Watkinsville Web site, the made suggested to up date the current logo and even created a new linear one that looked to me to be very useful as a header for correspondence or other places where a round one is hard to fit. b.   Vehicular/Pedestrian Signage for Tourism:  This group had lots of suggestions for adding signage to help tourists and other visitors find their way around.  Sugg...

Downtown Watkinsvile -- student visioning projects from Environmental Design UGA class of Professor Bruce Ferguson

Visioning projects can be an exercise in futility or a basis with which to engineer a new schematic for a city's survival. Watkinsville has been lucky to get a group of UGA students to design and dream what could be for our small town. Bruce Ferguson is a professor from UGA who went on some of the Saturday Strolls last year to bolster his Environmental Design students and their curriculum. Come see some of the results of their imagination and planning Monday of their semester long projects. A lot of time these plans are kind of like concept cars that look really sleek and cool but have almost no practical applications.  My sister Sarah who is in Atlanta right now has helped with some ideas along this line in Des Moines where I grew up. Some ideas will never happen, others happened right away because the city flooded 15 years ago. Woven brightly,  Daniel J. Watkinsville resident and UGA QB candidate Zach Mettenberger arrested for alcohol in South Georgia

Image
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is not the only idiot signal caller messing around with alcohol with some vague connection to Oconee (the Steelers QB has a home on Lake Oconee and decided to try instead to get wet in Milledgeville).  Former Oconee County High School quarterback Zach Mettenberger was arrested near Valdosta for possession of alcohol and other related charges. He was arrested at a bar called Flip Flops in Remerton, GA (surrounded by Valdosta) near Valdosta State University for disorderly conduct and underage possession of alcohol and possibly a third (felony)? charge and is now back in Athens. Zach's mother is a secretary for the UGA football team. Needless to say, this young man's spring break came crashing to a halt and he is suddenly entrenched in bottom of the supposed quarterback race at the University of Georgia. We wish the best for this Oconee County resident and hope he gets his act together, but at this point football may be ...

Sonny Perdue to be next President of UGA?

Former UGA football player and Veterinarian Sonny Perdue, currently lame duck Repubilcan Governor of Georgia, has reportedly been "set up" to be the next President of the University of Georgia. This might come as a surprise to current UGA President Michael Adams, who has long been rumored to be the replacement for the late Miles Brand, the former head of the NCAA. Needless to say, this is all extremely intriguing speculation without the least bit of corroboration, but it does come from a Washington, DC source. This will make for a whole lot of denials of hob

We caught the final field goal in the Bulldogs win today

Image
UGA field goal kicker Brandon Coutu nailed a long field goal toward the end of the Georgia Bulldogs game today with the Kentucky Wildcats. I was sitting with a physically challenged friend of mine in the handicap access area. My friend Steve said "you guys should move over toward the center for the field goal attempt" and we did. The kick was true, bounced right in my arms, I held it aloft and gave it to my son to throw back, which he did with a tight spiral. We had also caught one during the halftime that Coutu kicked from about the 50 yard line in the prelude to the second half. Many fans were throwing the ball back up further in the stands when the Wildcats warmed in the the start of the second half. We decided that it would be better sportsmanship to throw it back. I do not know if I had ever held a special kicking football before. It felt good. Lowell was very well behaved at the Georgia football game and thanks to all those who work to make the football season come of...
