Archie Jordan performs Valentine's concert to benefit YWCO at North Oconee HS

Image
From our friends at the YWCO comes a concert by an artist I was not familiar with before today: Award-winning songwriter/singer Archie Jordan will be performing at the acoustically magnificent and spacious North Oconee (High School) Fine Arts Center at 5:00 pm Sunday, February 14 with the $10.00 admission going to the benefit of the YWCO (Young Women's Christian Organization) and its programming.  He has been nominated for a Grammy award twice and has eight Number One songs to his credit, including " It Was Almost Like A Song " from the film The Bridges of Madison County as well as seven gold and three platinum albums. More than 100 artists have covered his songs . He plays the piano and guitar and uses comedy well in his small- town-story-filled concerts. You can get tickets from the YWCO or the Oconee Chamber of Commerce.

Oconee Road Czar part II

As long as I have the imperial power to do as please with the public transportation of this county, my next two targets would be the Oconee County campus of Gainesville State College and the Athens Academy access. The two parts of Bishop Farms Parkway shall be joined immediately, with proper work assuring the wetland control and possible bridge or other way to maintain the ecological integrity of the area. Secondary access to the 441 By-pass possibly involving the connected Bishop Farms Parkway or at least out of the parking lots. This would do wonders for Experiment Station and Government Station Roads after classes let out. Hagood Lane will be built out across to Summit Circle to supply the Congressman Paul Broun's backdoor to connect with Athens Academy so parents like me won't have to drive 70 on 441 to get to LaVista or Spartan Lane via Mason Mill or any other cut throughs. All neighboring subdivision shall be immediately available to have connectivity with the next ...

YWCO property approval proceeds in Oconee County

In a story much better written than the tripe I churned out for the Banana Herald editorial writer contest, the Oconee County Planning Commission recommended approval of the YWCO's massive plans for recreational expansion near Butler's Crossing. This is a very savvy move by the YWCO by shifting sites slowly and making sure they are doing things right as much as possible in both Oconee and Clarke counties. Obviously I am biased toward Oconee County, but I also realize the symbiotic relationship both counties have in more areas than just soccer and tennis. The comments of John Gentry, the head of the Oconee County Recreation Department, were very smart and well crafter and he is to be commended for running the department as well as it has been in quite some time. The YWCO offers a lot of choices in terms of sports and after school activities for kids and parents. In a slightly related matter, if you are available Sunday from 2 to 3 pm and want to enjoy some talented soccer b...

YWCO buys property in Oconee County

Oconee County residents may have more recreation choices in the near future after YWCO took the tender first steps toward an intended expansion by announcing the purchase of a large tract of property in near Butler's Crossing across from Briarwood Baptist Church on Hog Mountain Road (State Route 53)near Oconee County High School. The property in questions has been the subject of a rezone application before the Oconee County Planning Department before the recent deadline for the next meeting, but has yet to be accepted. The YWCO would like to build a fitness and aquatic center targeting the needs of families and seniors, according to a recent press release. "We have discussed this expansion for several years and believe that our mission and abilities will well serve the need(s) of Oconee County," said Dave Hudgins, YWCO Board President. Many Oconee County residents already utilize the YWCO through its fitness center, summer day camp program, daycare and aquatics program....
