From: "psommer" psommer@bellsouth.net Date: February 12, 2013 2:29:46 PM EST To: "'psommer'" psommer@bellsouth.net Subject: historical society needs help I just found out that the Parks and Recreation Department is advertising that the Oconee County Historical Society will be hosting tours of Central School House during Touch a Truck. It will be March 16 th   11-2pm. If you are interested in helping us host visitors, please let me know.  It's not difficult and we can teach you what you need to know. Peggy

Looking for help

The Oconee County Historical Society and the DAR will be sponsoring a float in the Watkinsville Christmas Parade December 4.  We plan to have people in historical costume accompanying the float to hand out 'old fashioned' candies and a flyer.  The flyer will have information about the society, some historical information about Christmas trees and we hope information about the upcoming campaign to restore the chairs in the auditorium at Central School House. We need folks willing to help with the candy and fliers.  Do not worry about the 'historical costume' part.  The history that the society covers goes from the beginnings of settlement in the area up to the present day so thinking of a costume might not be as difficult as you think.  If you need help with ideas we will help you figure out something.  Please let me know if you are willing to join in the fun. Tour of historic structures augments Touch A Truck event at Heritage Park

Image
The Oconee County Historical Society hosted free tours of three structures including the breathtakingly well preserved school house with new tin roof and a fresh coat of paint at Heritage Park Saturday during the Oconee County Recreation and Park Department's extremely successful "Touch A Truck" event Saturday below Farmington.  Tractor rides were given with large donation buckets not seeing nearly enough action for this history minor's preference. At one time several years back I was on a volunteer residents Historic Sites and Tourism committee tasked to find the perfect footprint for this school's relocation, which made national news coverage at the time. There were all kinds of hassles over methane pipes from former landfills as to exactly where and how close to the road and I am glad we are not still in meetings trying to figure out the best place to leave it. The Oconee County Historical Society gave tours of the three structures at Heritage Park in Sou...

Can you help with costs of signs for Historical Society?

Image
This just came in from Peg Sommer and the folks at the Oconee County Historical Society attempting to purchase some tasteful signs showing what we have here in Oconee County to display to students of historical structures. I applaud their efforts as always and urge you to consider a sizeable or small financial donation. --- On Tue, 5/12/09, psommer <psommer@bellsouth.net> wrote: From: psommer <psommer@bellsouth.net> Subject: can you help? Oconee County Historical Society meeting reminder

The Oconee County Historical Society will have a meeting Monday. I urge you to attend to hear the letters read by Mary Ruth Moore from her ancestors about Scull Shoals. Hi,             Our next meeting will be Monday the 11 th and we have a special treat in store.  Mary Ruth Moore read some more of her ancestor's letters at the festival in Scull Shoals over the weekend, much to everyone's delight.  She has promised to share the same stories with us Monday.             John and Richard have been working on wording and other information on signs for Central School house and we hope to have a report on that discussion also. Central School house another example of BOC bait and switch

Image
The Central School house was moved a couple miles down the road to Heritage Park a few years back too Heritage Park and it created a positive buzz of national media notoriety for Oconee County. Now the lack of action by the Board of Commissioners in the planning and budgeting for this facility is appalling but just more evidence of the disdainful practice of supporting something on the surface but denying important funds and infrastructure behind the scenes. Can't really call this lip service per se, but more of a bait and switch approach to appearing supportive to some thing that would be almost impossible to oppose, then behind the scenes making sure nothing gets appropriated or done on the project. The proposed park around Elder Mill Covered Bridge is another example of saying one thing and doing another.
