Watkinsville driver dies in wreck in Athens

ACCIDENT WITH FATALITY Around 2320 December 15, Preston Hoobler of Riverbend Pkwy, driving a 2000 Honda Civic, was southbound on S Milledge Ave. Lucas Gibson of Barnett Shoals Rd, Watkinsville, driving a 2001 Ford F150, was also southbound. Gibson approached the Hoobler vehicle from behind. Near the Davis St intersection, Gibson attempted to pass the Hoobler vehicle and his vehicle sideswiped the Hoobler vehicle. It appears that the Gibson vehicle was traveling at an excessive rate of speed and he lost control of his vehicle and it left the roadway. After striking the curb and a bus stop sign, the vehicle caught fire. Several bystanders attempted to pull Gibson, 35, from the vehicle but they were unable to free him due to the fire. The investigation continues. (12-0948)
