County roads connect and divide citizens - Oconee Enterprise: News

Georgia needs a Traffic Czar with emergency powers to enact whatever is needed to get transportation issues solved. This state is suffocating on its own success, one exhaust pipe at a time. Consistent laws and construction is needed to move people more efficiently around the bottle-necked back roads and freeways around the Atlanta and the suburbs. No more time for communities complaining about bringing MARTA to their doorstep. Peach Pass permits should allow drivers to accelerate up to 100 mph in the left lanes of all Interstates, not just 85 or 75 or 20 or 316. The reworking of Georgia 400 and 85 should have begun yesterday, and so does the Downtown Connector. Blake Giles writes a fair article concerning some of the more shady attempts by the Board of Commissioners Chairman in trying to railroad down a connector for one of his constituents. We cannot stand by and watch our leaders try to pave the roads of the future with political favoritism from the past. County roads connect and di

Animal advocates push for change at Oconee Animal Control - Oconee Enterprise: News

If there is any "new" political frontier for me personally in Oconee County in 2015, it has been animal related. This group of dedicated volunteers knows no allegiances to political parties or dogma, other than saving lives of animals.  I was honored to adopt and foster a wonderful chocolate brown pit bull terrier mama dog named Katrina, and through this process I became reacquainted with the amazing individuals who donate their time and often homes to save animals from being euthanized at our less-than-adequate facilities. Thank you so very much to Ashton Keegan and her mother Kim Crooks Keegan for allowing me the privilege of providing a place for Katrina to call home. The Oconee Enterprise writer Michael Prochaska passionately portrays an accurate overview of the  bureaucratic and parliamentarian struggles of the largely unsung and every day heroes who walk the dogs in the shelters and actively seeks new homes for abandoned or returned canines. Animal advocates push for c

Rain makes driving dangerous; stay at home unless you have to drive

The flash floods and the lightning have not let up this morning all over North Georgia with severe storms all over the state. Please be safe out there as there is standing water at the side of almost every road with hydroplaning and puddles on the pavement. I drove back from Atlanta this morning and can tell you that it was quite an adventure.

Dam threatening to fail at Briar Lakes Court

Per Oconee County Fire Rescue and Oconee County Public Works, the dam in Briar Lakes is in danger of failing. This will cut off access to homes on Briar Lakes Court. Residents on Briar Lakes Court are encouraged to leave now or risk being trapped in their homes. OCFR and deputies are attempting to make contact with residents at this time. We do not think there is any danger to other areas from this. There are no other areas with reported flood related problems at this time. If we become aware of any, we will send out Nixle alerts and post it on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
