Pat Priest ponders protecting our waterways with Ben Emanuel

Ben Emanuel, the Riverkeeper for the Oconee region of the Altamaha River system, came to the last meeting of the Oconee Democrats to talk about threats to water quality and quantity. He wondered if some of us would like to get involved to protect our rivers and streams. Ben is trained to present a "Get the Dirt Out" workshop ( www.getthedirtout.org ), which gives citizens the tools to monitor and observe construction sites for signs of erosion and practices that violate state law. Erosion from construction sites is terrible for wildlife, as fish and other creatures suffocate when sedimentation levels are high. Anyone interested in attending a workshop? Upcoming water events in the area (river-related)

Ben Emanuel spoke at the Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting last Thursday at Jittery Joe's in Watkinsville on St. Patrick's Day evening. The leader of the Oconee River Project led a far-ranging discussion about everything anyone wanted him to address about water and reservoirs in the area. He mentioned so many events coming up the end that I made sure he emailed them to me so I would not get them wrong. Woven brightly,  Daniel J. South Georgia Riverkeepers Host Mountaintop Removal Road Show January 25 - 28

Image
Mountaintop removal is an abomination that must be seen to fully appreciate the level of devastation. Instead of traveling to West Virginia or the Appalachian Mountains, why not go to Waycross, Albany or Statesboro (or maybe even author Janisse Ray's house for a potluck!) and hear more about this environmental travesty.
