More scenes from the recent past - Watkinsville City Council edition November 2016

Image
I am grateful to be joining this august body otherwise known as the Watkinsville City Council in January 2017. You are welcome to come to the swearing in ceremony 7:00 pm Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Watkinsville Community Center on VFW Drive (off State Route 53/Experiment Station Road) in lovely downtown Watkinsville. This will be the next to last meeting where I am on this side of the rail. The Watkinsville City Council approved the agenda with due diligence and only one vote after an applicant left the lectern. Various beer and wine as well as distilled spirits applications were approved at the usual places with the retiring gentlemen I am replacing remaining steadfast in his opposition to vote in the affirmative for any of the applicants.  So no unanimity, but all passed after brief inquiries.  I am looking forward to working with Watkinsville City Council members Marci Campbell, Connie Massey, and the Brian Brodrick, along with fellow new council me...

New Rotary Club built ramp at Rocket Field in Watkinsville

Image
The Pilots ROTARY (thanks Chuck Toney) Club in Oconee County worked hard to put this new handicap access ramp on Rocket Field in Watkinsville, according to Mayor Charles Ivie at the recent city council meeting. He praised their resourcefulness, skill and craft in difficult and challenging pitch and grade of the popular area for Little League baseball games, softball practices, and the Fall Festival.

Watkinsville City Council gets ready for changes

Image
The April meeting of the Watkinsville City Council was brief and to the point, with the point being many activities in the near and distant future for the county seat of Oconee County. All the members were here for the meeting with not a huge agenda but a very ambitious aim months and years down the line. One business license was approved at the onset, and that belonging to Ann Peden of Ann Peden Jewelry, opening her first retail outlet after other locations in Watkinsville catered to creating her jewelry and shipping them as far as Nebraska and Iowa.  Ann Peden plans to open in Town Center at 2 South Main Street, Suite 107 in the old Georgia Originals location. Ann had a location at Happy Valley Pottery, and they are now following in the location that the Jerry and Kathy Chappelle had in Town Center. Don Truelock received a framed proclamation for the Oconee Lions Club for their ongoing battle against privet and other invasive plants in cleaning up neighboring Harris Shoals Park. ...

Despite the numerous signs saying no campaigning on Rocket Field, guess which Chairman of the Board of Commissioners chose to ignore this and was glad handing everyone he could? We bought our usual dinosaur bone from the Karwoskis and did the candle melt thing and saw lots of big hair being done. The yard sale seemed to be going well except for lack of yard signs. Watkinsville City Council meeting agenda for Wednesday and a few suggestions

As Watkinsville City Council member Brian Brodrick is one to read this blog sometimes, I would like to suggest the following for our lovely little Rocket Field park. We should have some plastic bottles and aluminum can recycle bins for the concession stands at the Park. Little League folks have done well with refurbishing the field and surrounding area, but that actual field could use about a ton of new soil, especially in the batters' box. The City Council has done a great job of mandating the change to the fences around the field. This is our jewel, and we need to polish it up a bit. Here is the agenda for the 7 pm Wednesday meeting at the Watkinsville Community Center on VFW Drive near Harris Shoals Park.
