GA DEMS RELEASE JULY PRIMARY BALLOT QUESTIONS

Image
Here are the questions you can expect on the Democratic ballot for the Primary.  Of course you know by now if you want any influence whatsoever in Oconee County, you must vote in the Republican primary to get your vote to make any impact. There are no candidates to choose from in the Primary on the Democratic side this time around. We need candidates people, step up. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) had sharp criticism for Republican leadership for attempts to limit and close the floor debate and orchestrating a high-stakes power game that would ultimately hurt Georgia's students. Charter school needed for Oconee's future

I have not studied the 600 page proposal for the Charter School for Math and Science in Oconee County, nor do I claim any expertise in the area of academic innovation other than Governor Sonny Perdue signed some law easing the path for their creation and ultimate integration into the state and local school systems. Adam Thompson of the Athens Banner-Herald wrote a pretty balanced view of the evolution of this possible addition to the local schools. Jmac at Safe as Houses wrote an interesting take on this as well . All I know is more and more kids are being home schooled even here with one of the best school systems in the area if not the state, which is not a bad thing onto itself, but it is emblematic of a larger dissatisfaction with the public school system in Oconee County (and every where for that matter). There are soccer teams and journalism clubs planned, so I am down with those. The laptops and small teacher-student ratio work well for me. We have a few budding Einsteins who...

Charter School up for vote in June

The next Board of Education will not be the same as this one. The following is pulled from the Banner-Herald today Oconee County Board of Education members said this week they will vote on a proposed public charter school - the Oconee School of Math and Science - at their June 9 meeting. The charter school's organizers, including a number of University of Georgia faculty, are expected to appear before the board to answer questions Monday, at the board's regular session, said schools Superintendent Thomas Dohrmann. If approved by the local school board and the state Department of Education, the Oconee School of Math Science would open for the 2010-11 school year, according to a petition submitted last month
