Oconee County's Zach Mettenberger, recently banished from Valdosta for groping a girl twice at a bar and kicked off the University of Georgia football team, claims he is going to get a scholarship to play football for the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is not the only idiot signal caller messing around with alcohol with some vague connection to Oconee (the Steelers QB has a home on Lake Oconee and decided to try instead to get wet in Milledgeville).  Former Oconee County High School quarterback Zach Mettenberger was arrested near Valdosta for possession of alcohol and other related charges. He was arrested at a bar called Flip Flops in Remerton, GA (surrounded by Valdosta) near Valdosta State University for disorderly conduct and underage possession of alcohol and possibly a third (felony)? charge and is now back in Athens. Zach's mother is a secretary for the UGA football team. Needless to say, this young man's spring break came crashing to a halt and he is suddenly entrenched in bottom of the supposed quarterback race at the University of Georgia. As the self proclaimed Emperor of the Trans Oconee Republic, I hereby deem the shadow Board of Education appointed with Rich Clark, Ashley Hood, Chuck Toney and Kyle Martin as charter members. Their roles shall be to foster understanding between parents and teachers, administrators and the populace, to explain where our monies have been going, why we pay two Superintendents at the same time, and why Dr. Tom Dohrmann was expelled. Together we will make a better burrito than Barberitos and have school lunches kids will actually eat, covet and enjoy. Our softball coaches will no longer diddle their students, past, present or future. Our football teams will craft the offensive schemes to our quarterback's needs, creating the West Coast offense for Zach Mettenbergers. Three point lines will be painted all on basketball courts and all children will make a minimum of ten a day. The Brodrick family shall lead the entire student populace on a bike/race/jog/walk around the schools every day....

Given all the shock and dismay over the Oconee County High School softball coach's sleazy and reprehensible behavior with one of his recent former players , I am glad there is something positive to write about this week. After rain and thunderstorms delayed kick off for an hour, the Titans of North Oconee and the Spartans of Athens Academy made the home folks proud with victories in the opening rounds of the Georgia High School Association football playoffs last night. I hope both teams go all the way to the Georgia Dome and win, but each week will become increasingly difficult. Also this season you have to make it all the way to the Finals for the trip to the Dome (instead of the semifinals, where Athens Academy made it the last two years). I feel sorry for the Oconee County HS Warriors quarterback Zach Mettenberger in their opening round loss at Gainesville but he will be enrolled at UGA soon enough and finally be surrounded by talent equal to his on his side of the ball.
