Jay Hanley forms online exploratory committee for County Commission race in 2008

The political adolescence of Jay Hanley continues online at Facebook at the very least. 14 friends have joined the son of former Watkinsville City Council member John Hanley in his group. According to his Facebook group "Yes, the group name speaks for itself. In response to requests from friends, I am exploring or thinking about a run for an Oconee County Commission post in 2008.

I understand there may be one or more open seats on the Commission in 2008 and I would only run for an open seat. I'm not interested in running against an incumbent. I did that once when I ran for Watkinsville City Council. It's very difficult. Plus, I like and respect the current board members."

We post this only as a well placed warning shot across the bow to all the other folks who might consider running for the Board of Commissioners, and I would certainly support a few more taxpaying and homeowning candidates for the Oconee County Commission.

I wonder which seat Jay thinks will be open. I would not bet on Margaret Hale or Chuck Horton leaving their seats or not seeking re-election. That would leave Post 1 and 2, and I thought this would be the first of the much-ballyhooed staggered election. Will Don Norris or Jim Luke not seek re-election? Are those even the correct posts up for that next election cycle? Will we see other more seasoned candidates campaign against Hanley for the slot? It will be an interesting political campaign here in Oconee County, Georgia as well as the rest of Northeast Georgia and the country.

No one should take Hanley's age or lack of being elected as a reason to not take him seriously as a candidate who could very easily emerge victorious. I believe this would be the third or fourth campaign he would have been involved with before the age of 25, an impressive feat for anyone at any age. He is very well organized, computer savvy and well networked. He will provide a serious campaign opponent for someone soon should he decide to go ahead and file as a candidate. Please keep us posted on campaign developments and prospective candidates from all over Oconee County.

While none of the following names have ever indicated they will or even would be interested in running for any (other) political office, I would still like to see Dr. Russ Page run for office, or perhaps Henry Hibbs, Brian Brodrick, Samantha Purcell, Violet Dawe, Dr. Donald Dawe, Ken Starratt, Jeff Gold, Don Walter, Robin Hoag , Charlie Hoag, Rich Rusk, Peggy Holcomb, Kathleen McQuiston, Fred Johnson or others for the Board of Commissioners slots in 2008.
