A deep wound waiting to be healed - restoring order and dignity in the city cemetery
The Watkinsville City Cemetery is an oasis amidst the houses on the east side of the municipality, near the neighborhood once called Sidney.
There is a large section of the cemetery that remains a mystery, but perhaps we can work together to dignify the eternal resting spot somewhat better than the current neglected and forgotten (not to mention unmarked) graves of 70 people, more than likely of African-American descent.
They deserve to be honored as well.
An effort has been undertaken to repair the graves with fill dirt to stop the continued erosion amongst the graves.
The most recent grave and bench belong to Larry Sheats, and as any one who played basketball at Herman C. Michael Park or knew him otherwise can attest, he was among the best people this county has ever seen. Larry was always ready to help. Now it is our turn to help. Do it for someone you knew there, maybe the Hardens, or the Downs, or any number of other people, but allow me to reminisce about how Larry used to school me in hoops and other import life matters for a moment.
A renowned horseman and equestrian supporter, he was always available to ride horses in the Watkinsville Christmas parade or whatever event was necessary.
He used to have his knees flying above my forehead when driving past me in for a lay up at Herman C. Michael gymnasium during my tenure at the Open Gym basketball on Sundays and other nights during the week when that was the one place to go play basketball at a new court in the area (1989-94). Larry would also talk to me about "his main man" Roy Firestone on ESPN, his son Dekie's immense athletic prowess or any number of other topics.
Now it could be our time to gel as community behind the effort to repair the unmarked graves as best possible with wheelbarrow, dirt, and few dozen boy scouts if possible.
Obviously not all graves are unknown there. This is not to pass judgment on the method that many Southern cemeteries chose to self segregate per the custom of the day, but more how to heal the wounds of segregation and lack of recognition, largely in the African-American section of the cemetery, some even under the road, but dozens of people deserving burial with honor in restoring this cemetery more than two centuries old.
The effort could be accomplished with a couple of boy scout troops moving wheelbarrow's full of dirt and placing them onto the graves, 70 of which have been marked.
How quickly it comes together probably depends on an Eagle Scout candidate or two coming together to deploy the human effort necessary to accomplish such a task on a weekend or two. Initial emails have been sent without any response yet, but hopes remain for several different troops could come together to assist in this effort.
That and several dozen wheelbarrows should do the trick.
I am certainly going to leave the more serious work of determining where and how to accomplish this task to those who are better and more formally trained in historic preservation of old cemeteries to determine how to accomplish this best.
I know there are people ready to help out with this much deserved project, where ideally we could have a couple of scout troops, perhaps one from around here and another in a neighboring county, and get this taken care of as quickly as possible to preserve the graves that are sinking more and more each day.
Prior to the 20th century, burial places existed in the vicinity of the flag pole. Many of the marked graves have inscriptions, and Mulberry Street existed and connected with Whitehall Bridge Road.
In the early 20th century, graves were grouped by family, with two acres added to the graveyard on the east side. Families purchased burial plots, and plots were laid out geometrically with pathways in between. A row of oak trees were planted.
In the mid 20th century are are of about two acres were given to the city as for "colored people." This is not surveyed, but northern boundary coincided with the remnants of Mulberry Street. Who received the payments from the African American people all those years ago?
By the late 20th century, there was a citizens group that established a memorial fund for cemetery maintenance that came from donations. Eventually a hard surface road was paved right over some anonymous burial plots among other places.
The City of Watkinsville has contributed considerable financial and personnel resources to the ongoing maintenance of the cemetery.
There is no easy prescription for how we can best take care of this cemetery's situation, but with enough publicity, volunteer efforts, and the dedication of a few determined people we can make a difference for generations to come.
The graves have been mapped with the proper equipment, but no what are the steps to resurrecting the sunken sites?
It will take shovels, it will take fill dirt, and it will take a considerable amount of sweat equity on the part of at least several dozen youngsters with wheelbarrow.
The City of Watkinsville does a fine job of maintaining the recognized parts of the cemetery, but it is the largely unmarked areas to the western side of the cemetery toward the creek and the largely abandoned back end of the dirt road known as Mulberry Street that needs to be addressed and healed.
With the right kind of leadership and volunteer efforts this can be accomplished. Together we can make this a much better place for generations to come, black, white, red, yellow or brown, it makes no difference, but we can make a difference if we donate a shovel or wheelbarrow or even some efforts to clean, prune, and help to upkeep the cemetery.
But tracing the evolution of the graveyard from there gets tricky,
officials say. Burial plots shoot off east under large trees, south
toward Simonton Bridge Road and west into the woods of a neighboring
property.
Then there are the impossible-to-answer questions about the 6-acre tract with more than 900 graves. Who is buried beneath the stones where the writing has eroded away? And why aren't there records of just who is buried where?
Even the line where the cemetery stops and Augusta Verner's property begins is unclear, Watkinsville Mayor Jim Luken said.
"People bought plots of land in the cemetery, but we don't know who they bought them from," said Luken, noting that the city doesn't even own the cemetery.
The Daughters of the American Revolution learned all that when some members began studying ways to get the old graveyard listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In order to register a graveyard, the land must be surveyed and have clear boundaries, said Oconee DAR Regent Dana Anderson. The national register also requires a map of the burial plots, which no one seems to have, she said.
"It's such an old cemetery that there's a lot of oral history, but not a lot of recorded history," Anderson said. "Without a map, it's hard to know. There's a lot more history to be found here."
The cemetery originally belonged to a Methodist church built next to it, but the church burned down in the 1820s and never was rebuilt, DAR member Laurie Traill said. The city acquired it in 1837 and sold plots to families in the area, Traill said.
All the while, locals kept burying loved ones there, expanding the cemetery with no real plan until some of the graves crept onto Verner's property, Luken said.
"The graves are disorganized," he said. "It's Mrs. Verner's land, and people have been digging graves back there for a long time."
In 1979, the city got rid of the cemetery: Officials said that the land was privately owned by everyone who had plots in it, though the city government agreed to clean it up periodically with donations, Luken said.
"That's the agreement we go by today," he said. "It's a real unusual situation."
Some funeral homes like Lord & Stephens still have services and dig graves there, but only if the grave site is part of a family plot, said Dale Rogers, a funeral director at the Lord & Stephens Danielsville Chapel.
Watkinsville officials still host cleanup days at the graveyard. The DAR also will have a cleanup day Dec. 12.
But tidying the graves is only part of restoring the cemetery, Luken said. Ultimately, officials will need to puzzle out the graveyard's boundary lines.
"I think the answer is to get some groups to work together - including an attorney or two - to work out the property lines of the cemetery," he said.
The DAR wants to be one of those groups that cleans up the cemetery and restores some of the graveyard, Traill said.
Many of the headstones have broken in half or cracked or are no longer legible. Trees and bushes have grown wild around and even through other monuments.
Many square feet of wavy ground have no markers at all, but just bits and pieces of stones. DAR volunteers have looked through old newspaper clippings and other records and discovered that 88 veterans from every major American conflict are buried in the graveyard, but not all of their graves are accounted for.
The DAR plans to do more research and ultimately find every grave on the grounds, Anderson said.
A complete survey of the cemetery will move the tract of Watkinsville history closer to the National Register.
"In finding the veterans, we found a lot of people who are interesting and important to this area," Traill said. "The whole history of Watkinsville is in here."

Watkinsville Cemetery full of history, but much of it hidden
