What took you so long to let us know?

From Sheriff Scott Berry:
This past Thursday, December 10th, Sheriff’s investigators and a GBI agent responded to North Oconee High School to assist with an incident at the school that resulted in a lockdown of the school as a precautionary measure. School and law enforcement officials determined that there was no immediate threat to the school, and the lockdown was lifted.
A person of interest was identified that same day, and investigators continued to work the case. Ultimately, evidence convincingly linked the person of interest to the incident.
A juvenile complaint for terroristic threats and disrupting a school has been filed. Due to the fact that the suspect is juvenile, their identity cannot be disclosed. Furthermore, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibit the disclosure of school disciplinary records.
The Oconee County School Board Office and North Oconee High School staffs were in communication with us throughout this entire process, and they have been completely cooperative. This is the norm; it is not an exception.

From the Oconee County Schools:
As you know, last Thursday our school was placed on lockdown for a period of time while school leaders and law enforcement officers investigated disturbing statements written in a student restroom. The student suspected of causing this disruption has been identified, and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office has informed me that a juvenile complaint will be filed against that student today. The student has not returned to North Oconee since last Thursday, and the appropriate course of school district discipline will follow.
Let me express my deep gratitude for the cooperation and support of Sheriff Scott Berry and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. They always go above and beyond the call of duty, and this case was no exception. When you have the opportunity, please join me in thanking them for their steadfast support of our students and our school.
