Time to write your BOC members to stop stupid growth

Once again the Board of Commissioners will consider a rezone that will encroach on residential and agricultural areas. This rezone is along Daniels Bridge Road. Folks in Tanglebrook, Windy Creek, Northwest Woods and the Farmington area as well as several other neighborhoods are unfortunately all too familiar with this scenario. The Planning Commission recommended approval of this proposal, at its last meeting and the BOC will consider it at its next meeting on May 1. Following is the text of a message from Lee Becker with more information about the rezone and the Planning Commission hearing. Come to the May 1 hearing and support the folks along Daniels Bridge Road. If you live in a neighborhood where this has not happened, you are lucky, but your time is coming. If you have already experienced it you know it takes a lot of citizen input to be heard.

Charlie Baugh
Dear Neighbors:

The Planning Commission voted 8-1 tonight to recommend that the piece of property on the blind curve on Daniels Bridge Road be rezoned for an Office Business Park.

Three people spoke against. We turned in petitions signed by 50 people opposed. As far as we have been able to tell, only the person owning the adjoining property is in favor of this. He wants to sell for future development as well, moving the business development closer to our residential communities.

This rezone, according to the staff report, will put another 1,500 cars on to Daniels Bridge Road each day. As Daniels Bridge at the Mars Hill and SR 316 connection becomes even more clogged, that traffic is going to come down Daniels Bridge Road toward Hog Mountain Road. And more development along Daniels Bridge Road will follow.

The Planning Commission has put development ahead of infrastructure, ignored safety issues, and refused to acknowledge that this is a treat to a residential neighborhood.

I think we can win this. Ken Beall, representing the developer, spent a lot of time trying to refute the comments the three of us who were opposed made. The Planning Commission asked lots of questions of staff. I think the Board of Commissioners, who are elected and more sensitive to voter pressure, can be made to see that this is a bad decision that is not favored by a large number of people.

But it will take work. We need 300 petitions, not 50. We need 30 speakers, not 3. We need 100 people at the Board of Commissioners meeting on May 1, not 3. And we need to send email to the Commissioners immediately, telling them how bad of a decision we think the Planning Commission has made.

Let's start today. Write to the Commissioners at:

Melvin Davis, mdavis@oconee.ga.us
Jim Luke, jluke@oconee.ga.us
Don Norris, dnorris@oconee.ga.us
Margaret Hale, margarethale@oconee.ga.us and marghale@aol.com
Chuck Horton, chorton@oconee.ga.us

Please pass this on.

Lee
