The Oconee County Democrats are sponsoring a movie night for
local Democrats January 21st at Ciné in Athens. We'll see the fun and
thought-provoking movie "Outsourced." Please check the papers for the
7-ish showing.

From a review in the New York Times: In its modest way, "Outsourced"
may be unique: a charming culture-clash romance that could be taught in
business schools.

One other important thing!

I know that people hold mixed views on the proposed project called
NBAF (National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility). Even if you are in
favor because of our area's interest in building a bio-science focus,
citizens will need to keep on top of the issues because of the safety
concerns inherent in bringing a Level-4 pathogen lab here.

A local nonprofit is sponsoring in a speaker on the 22nd to talk about
security lapses at other, similar labs. The building --
the size of 5 Walmarts -- would be situated at the base of South
Milledge, where the horse farm currently sits along the river. The
facility would be run by Homeland Security if Athens is chosen as the
site for NBAF later this year.

Here's information about the public event (forwarded by retired attorney
and author Grady Thrasher):

F.A.Q. Inc., an Athens-based, non-profit citizens' awareness
organization working For Athens Quality-of-Life, is sponsoring an
all-community meeting Tuesday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Georgia
Center for Continuing Education at 1197 S. Lumpkin Street.

The guest speaker is Edward Hammond, U. S. Director of The Sunshine
Project (www.sunshine-project.org.), the international watchdog
organization that monitors the proliferation and mismanagement of highly
dangerous pathogen laboratories in the U.S. and abroad. His talk is
titled "Germs, Weapons and Secrets: The Proliferation of Bio-defense
Labs in the United States." All residents of Athens-Clarke County,
Oconee County and surrounding communities should hear what he has to
say. A question and answer period will follow the talk.
