Statement From Sherry Jackson On The State's $600 Million Shortfall

"I'd say it was shocking to see that our state is more than $600 million in the red this year, but after the inaction and infighting the past two years I'm not terribly shocked by much coming out from under the Gold Dome anymore. Our economy is struggling and our citizens are hurting, and the inability of the Republican leadership to recognize how these troubles would impact our overall economic situation is disappointing and distressing. We've just completed yet another session without the appropriate investments in education, without the appropriate tax reform we need to help our citizens and without the appropriate fiscal discipline we need to weather a crisis like this one.

My question - particularly since we've cut money from our education and transportation budgets so recklessly the past couple of years - is what are we spending this money on? It's time for some leadership in Atlanta that knows how to plan responsibly for the economic challenges we will face from time to time, will exercise some leadership and fiscal restraint in difficult times and knows how to get some bang for the buck with the resources they're given."

·         Sherry Jackson, the Democratic candidate for the Georgia State Senate's District 46 seat, is the executive director of the Community Care Services Program and is a lawyer for the Elderly Legal Assistance Program. She is committed to providing the necessary support and resources that will enable our local communities to meet the challenges Georgia faces with regard to education, economic growth and opportunity, health care, transportation, water management and a whole host of other issues that impact working families.
