Wednesday morning quarterbacking
I am just as flabbergasted at some of the results as the rest of you. The air was sucked out of the big upstairs courtroom last night as the final votes were tallied in the chair race. Sarah Bell ran a good race and emerged out of nowhere to challenge chairman Davis to the very end. I guess this means despite the perceived anti-incumbency fervor fanned by everything from Jim Ivey to secret meetings to courthouse moving rumors, Oconee County residents are reluctant to change leadership by a very slim margin.
Looks like Oconee County voters rewarded John Daniell for his patience and smacked down Don Norris because of his suggestions about moving the courthouse. It also appears that there are more favorable memories of former fifth grade students of Kim Argo than there were people who actually voted for Ashley Hood. Hood knocked on many different doors in almost every subdivision in the county, but did not prevail despite an amazing collection of people helping her out. I really hope Ashley Hood and Chuck Toney continue to work in the community to help our children in many different way. They are young and new to the grizzled world of county politics and are amongst the best and brightest people on our horizon.
Please both consider running again for office in Oconee County again in the near future. Perhaps there will be openings again on the Board of Education in the near future.
I was very disappointed in the relatively poor turnout considering Oconee's outstanding recent history of 80% voting. I guess there was no fire under the seat of a lot of the complacent electorate in this county. Advice is always solicited but seldom followed even by the most willing candidates.
Signs are overrated in terms of accurately guessing get out the vote and other activities. Public speaking, experience and impressions of leadership skills are hard to top in the minds of a lot of voters. Advertising does not elect people either, especially free advertising. You can also spend a lot of your own money and not win, witness Johnny Pritchett and Mike Maxey.
Rumors and innuendo can be lethal, although sometimes responding to rumors can lend credence to otherwise unbelievable comments and chatter. Blogs do not elect people either, no matter how much we wish they did.
