Movie Night with Local Democrats

My mother was once responsible for securing Hunter S. Thompson from the Des Moines Airport during the winter of 1971. She was the co-chair for the McGovern campaign. We were in the midst of a horrible Iowa blizzard, and my mom was searching for him numerous times during the afternoon and evening. His flight had come in late on a Sunday and no one could find him in the airport. We finally did find him passed out packing heat in an "unknown" bar upstairs in the airport. Unbeknowst to us, he had "opened" a bar with his pistol holding a terrified barkeep hostage until he was served enough of his favorite antifreeze.

Woven brightly,

--------------Here's our press release--------------------------------

The Oconee Democrats invite the public to join them for a Movie
Night at Ciné at 6:30 Monday, September 1st, to see and discuss the
documentary "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson." The
New York Times calls the 2008 film a "fascinating history lesson"; it
draws from interviews with former president Jimmy Carter and former
presidential candidates Patrick Buchanan and George McGovern in addition
to other political and literary figures. Claudia Puig of USA Today
wrote, "'Gonzo' is not just a fascinating portrait of an enigmatic and
charismatic figure but a serious examination of the social and political
milieu in which he flourished. Thompson wrote compelling articles in the
early days of Rolling Stone that brought an original, candid voice and
subversive edge to political journalism."

Ticket and concession prices at Ciné are reduced on Mondays. Attendees
should meet inside after buying tickets and are invited to stay after
the movie to discuss the film.

Becky Vaughn, Chair of the Oconee Democrats, said, "Hunter S. Thompson
was a troubled but brilliant journalist whose writing changed political
journalism. Our group is always striving to learn more about our
nation's rich history -- and even its renegades -- through films, books,
and discussions. We want to get together, too, to show our support for
the area's only arthouse cinema -- a wonderful resource."
