Organized at the last minute for all of us who are not going to DC January 20th.  Come downtown beginning at 5:30!   The "ad hoc committee" wanted to have some way to mark this historic event locally as a community. (There is also a semi-formal ball at the Classic Center later in the evening sponsored by the Athens Human Relations Council.  Contact the Classic Center for ticket information )

Athens Inauguration 2009 Community Celebration of Hope

Downtown Athens, GA, January 20, 2009, 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm

5:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Twilight Candlelight Community Prayer Service of Hope, City Hall

A gathering of the local community led by a cross-denominational group of religious leaders. Participants are encouraged to bring their own candles.

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Soul Food Dinner Buffet at Wilson's Soul Food, 351 Hull St.

Fried chicken, two vegetables, dessert, and cold tea. ($10 = $8 dinner + $2 donation for One Athens & Athens Economic Justice Coalition)

7:00 pm 

Inaugural Night Musical Celebration of Hope for President Obama, Little Kings, 223 W. Hancock Ave. (at Hull). Will include a variety of musical expressions of hope including Gus D with other local Hip Hop artists, singer songwriter Caroline Aiken, pianist Norman Barnett, South American musical group Incatepac, & other local musicians.

The Ad-Hoc Athens Inauguration 2009 Community Celebration Committee is pleased to announce the above activities planned locally for the evening of the Tuesday, Jan. 20, for the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama. These events will share a theme of hope for the President, his new administration and the country based on "a belief that we're all connected as one people" (Barack Obama, 2004, speech at the Democratic Convention)
