So where were all the mentions of our meeting in Oconee County media today?
Thursday is the day for the weekly newspapers to come out in Oconee County. For some reason the local newspapers seem to never want to mention that we have our Oconee County Democratic Committee meetings at the Government Annex on Highway 15 in the southern part of Watkinsville. Let me spell it out and maybe it will help the local newspapers. I just sent them an announcement or press release for the rest of the meetings of 2009. I hope they will at least call if not include us in their calendar listings.
We learned a lot about continuing efforts of the Oconee County Democratic Committee this evening. For instance, the Mayor of North High Shoals Jeff Thomas has postponed his long promised resignation until the pending re-election of city council members Violet Dawe and Fred Johnston in November. We also learned all about a book being written by a North High Shoals journalist resident about her murdered attorney husband "Memoirs of a a Dead Lawyer's Wife", the sign in the yard of another resident calling the Mayor a liar and the total of the last vote there was 160 people.
Also discussed this evening were the Saturday Stroll series in Watkinsville across the street from the Farmer's Market starting at 9 am Saturday morning with a walking tour from Mark Cooper Smith, who owns Full Moon Recording Studio on School Street where the likes of Vic Chesnutt, Magnapop and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland have done some recording. The studio is also the location of the recording of the new radio show Athens, Georgia Outside In heard several times weekly on the low power FM radio station Rock 100.7 FM. The band performing this evening is called Heavy Feather, and some of you may have heard of them in their previous name of Jackpot City.
There are many other people from both parties leading walks in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Republicans including Sheriff Scott Berry, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners G. Melvin Davis and State Representative Bob Smith will be leading Saturday Strolls in the ensuing Saturdays. Just to make it clear to those who do not know, we are donating the $5 admission fee to the charity of the person's choice who is leading the walk. For instance this week it is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that will be the recipient of any proceeds made from the walk led by Cooper Smith.
There are three vacant slots on the Committee and we welome anyone who wishes to be part of the majority party in this country. Any residents of Oconee County, Georgia are welcome to attend our next meeting August 20th to be considered or nominated for the positions. Also Becky Vaughn will be honored for bringing back to the Oconee County Democratic Committee a few years back before moving to Washington, DC for the next year at least. She will maintain a residence and residency in Oconee County but will be taking her youngest soccer star daughter Carter to a special magnet school in the DC area.
