No wonder State Representative Bob Smith has been so uncharacteristically quiet about the Speaker's race. Seems he hitched his cart to the wrong horse. Payback is hell (especially in Oconee County). Now the old "well we need Bob Smith to protect our interests" line becomes even more irrelevant and inappropriate. Back when the Banner-Herald used to pay me to cover municipalities' meetings, I can recall one of the more conservative former mayors calling him and every other local legislative leader out back when Smith ostensibly had more power and influence. Now can one of the mystery candidates clamoring for a certain local political consultant's help step up to take on Smith for the next campaign with gusto and vigor (and most important of all, campaign funds)?

Jeff Dantzler's arrests may be the best thing that ever happened to him

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. Any one who has listened to 960 the Ref AM sports talk radio or heard the UGA Lady Dawgs or men's baseball team has surely heard the encyclopedic knowledge of one Jeff Dantzler. Jeff and I are pretty much diametrically opposed poltically, but today he was arrested on four counts including DUI. I hope he gets the help he needs following his incarceration. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
