The Oconee County Board of Commissioners met in their regular Tuesday night monthly meeting March 29, 2011 in the Commission Meeting Chambers of the Oconee County Courthouse.
Chairman Melvin Davis always runs a very entertaining and efficient meeting, and this one was no different. He had a very busy meeting with lots of important decisions to be made, some discussed here, others reported elsewhere.
The meeting began with honoring Henry Hibbs, retiring Oconee County Extension Director, from a former extension service worker in Davis himself.
Then the Board of Commissioners planned to present new Federal Judge and recent Western Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Steve Jones, who was absent and could not attend. They are planning for a future ceremony where the resolution can be read.
A community service board report came from Kate McDaniel about Advantage Behavioral Health System, which is the mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services for a 10 county area of Northeast Georgia, including Oconee County. Miss Kate is the Board Chairperson as well as the Oconee County Community Service Board representative from here. She by all accounts does a fine job, and all present were very appreciative of her efforts, including CEO Dr. Cindy A. Darden.
The statistics for those needing help in Oconee are somewhat deceiving, as even McDaniel acknowledged there should be more than one adult with addictive diseases being treated from Oconee County.
The Board of Commissioners make an annual contribution to Advantage, and 300 citizens have been served from Oconee County.

The Board of Commissioners also interviewed applicants for the Animal Control Advisory Board and the Family and Children Services Board. Then they received the recommendations for the Special Master (Jim Warnes who lives in Athens but practices law in Oconee County) and Alternate Special Master (Oconee County attorney David Linder) in case of an ethics query against Board of Commissioners members.
Dr. Tony Glenn fielded questions about the Tour D'Oconee. I yield the blog to the previous post by Becker for a better account of the the T-SPLOST changes brought about later in the meeting.

| County attorney Daniel Haygood gestures toward the Oconee County Board of Commissioner members about them approving signs to share the road via email prior to the actual meeting. He actually pondered if they all had Facebook profiles for a future example and making a decision online. Lee Becker brought this to the attention of the Commissioners more for the method than the result. (Photo by Dan Matthews) |
