Minutes of the Oconee Democratic Committee Meeting
September 15 2011 Oconee County Government Annex

Committee members present: Ann Stoneburner (1-3), Sarajane Love (2-3), Violet Dawe (1-1), Liz Goodroe (4-3), Pat Adams (6-3), Dan Matthews (2-2), Jonathan Veit (2-1)
Committee members absent and excused:  Tony Glenn (1-2), Robert Wyatt (6-1), Peggy Thrasher Law (4-2), Diana Jeffreys (6-2), Vicky Moody (4-1),
Absent: Linda Elkins, Rita Bennett
Guest: Nancy DeRemo
With a quorum present, Ann called the meeting to Order at 7:10PM
Approval of the agenda for the 9-15-11 meeting: Sarajane moved to approve; Dan seconded, all approved.
Approval of minutes of the meeting on August 18 2011: Dan moved, Sarajane seconded; all approved.
Violet Dawe gave the Treasurer’s report, our balance is same as last month, $XX,XXX.XX.  Question was asked if all committee members have paid their dues? Violet wasn’t sure, but will check.  Discussion about state committee request for monetary contribution from local committees. Violet will check and confirm. 
Ann gave an over-view of the progress and planning for the September 18th celebration of Rita’s retirement.  Details about the party were finalized:  set up will begin @ 1PM.  Dan will take photos. 
Ann gave the report for Rita Bennett regarding plans for Fall Festival Fundraiser, October 15:
Tables:  Rita has 2; Violet has 4; Vickie has 4. 
Tents: Violet; Vickie; Pat Priest ?;
Transportation of big items to Rita’s house: Dan has a truck and will help pick up items; Jonathan also can help pick up/deliver large items. 
Yard Sale street signs: recycle signs from previous sales;
Self-labeling of items before delivery to Rita’s:  self labeling of items was determined to be the preferred way to go; tables of dollar ranges; set up is the night before – tables, chairs, tents need to be over at Rita’s night before.  October 14, 6:00PM set up time. Workers: 
7 – 10 am includes set-up- Rita, Sarajane; Ann will get coffee from Jittery’s; Violet; 
10    am – 2 pm – Rita, Liz, Pat Adams,

2 pm – 4pm includes take down- Rita, Robert Wyatt.
Sarajane Love discussed Adopt-A-Road Clean-up for November 2011.  Various dates were discussed:  November 05 is UGA Homecoming, November 12, and 19 are all home games.  Selected date for next Adopt-A-Road Clean-up: Nov 5 @ 1pm, meet at the Firehouse
Violet and Ann discussed plans for dinner/fundraiser at Piccolo’s in honor of Patsy Harris.  They suggested some dates that suit Tim at Piccolo’s: Oct. 24th, since Fall Break for UGA comes later that week, or November 7th, following Fall Break weekend.  Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays are preferred.  The fundraiser will produce 20% profit over the normal receipts.  Lunch and dinner menus will be offered, but, as this is a fundraiser, it is hoped attendees will order from the dinner menu!  Violet suggested publicizing this at Rita’s party, so we need a firm date by Sunday.  Ann will check with Patsy about her availability. 
Ann raised the option of bimonthly meetings for discussion.  Are we meeting too frequently?  Or is monthly still appropriate?  Round table discussion concluded monthly meetings are still suitable, but we need a guest speaker once in a while. 
Dan will be at First Friday on October 7th.  Liz suggested going to the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.  Harris Shoals Park is having a clean-up weekend before Fall Festival.  Jonathan asked what Ivey’s platform is, and, according to Dan, it is “TSPLOST.”  Jonathan suggested Dan pay homage to Jim Luken and Joe Walter for all the great work they have done overseeing the re-development of downtown Watkinsville.  Dan said there is a Forum scheduled at the Library on Oct 13.  The meet and greet starts at 6:30PM, and at 7PM the forum begins.  Blake Giles is moderator.
Ann raised a couple of other items, related to the by-laws such as the language to be used by the Committee when contributions are made to a candidate for public office and the need for an African-American Subcommittee.
Pat Adams made a motion to adjourn and was seconded by Sarajane, all in favor, meeting adjourned at 8:40PM.

Jeff Dantzler's arrests may be the best thing that ever happened to him

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. Any one who has listened to 960 the Ref AM sports talk radio or heard the UGA Lady Dawgs or men's baseball team has surely heard the encyclopedic knowledge of one Jeff Dantzler. Jeff and I are pretty much diametrically opposed poltically, but today he was arrested on four counts including DUI. I hope he gets the help he needs following his incarceration. I work for a lawyer who could help him out if he does not having someone already representing him. This man is a great broadcaster and I hope this arrest serves as a wake-up call for him and his rock and roll lifestyle. I live a far from perfect life myself but long ago and far away I learned how and when not to drink. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

The booking photo is not to be placed on any web page that charges a fee for booking photo removal. Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
