Berry blasts Downs for being irresponsible in posting county credit card numbers
So it seems it comes down to this: do you want someone who knows the ropes or do you want someone to clean house? Again, I urge voters to back Sheriff Berry and not just because Trey Downs briefly posted some credit card numbers in his zeal. It seems our current Sheriff made some enemies a while back because he took a young, drunken man off the roads as well as the Nationwide and NASCAR circuit who had family connections to the Zaxby's wealth. I would imagine if everyone arrested in the last 20 years in Oconee County got together and backed a stealth candidate whose parents had run a day care center that any incumbent would be in serious trouble. I think this race is going to be very close, but I urge all voters in Oconee County to ask for a Republican ballot in either the advanced voting or on July 3 and check the little box next to Scott Berry's name.
I have had open records requests made on me when I ran for office twice last year. I had to do an open records request to find out who was so curious about my car port. Nothing was redacted in either case. I think this current brouhaha is much ado about nothing in the most substantive analysis, but it does show a distinct lack of thoroughness in investigating I find troubling and not something that makes me any more willing to back Mr. Downs for Sheriff right now.
At the very least, whether you think room service is a very big deal or not, I think it comes down to whether or not you think a Law Enforcement Official should go and post 600 pages of county records when he himself has not gone over every page with a fine tooth comb. Yes Jeff Benko should have redacted the relevant information. Yes the County should have a better policy in place to deal with Freedom of Information Act requests and to protect the privacy of our bank account, credit cards, and home addresses of individuals both involved in police work and those that might be questioned by said legitimate law enforcement. Let us all learn from this tempest in a chicken soup bowl and re-elect Sheriff Scott Berry to better serve our local interests than that of Trey Downs right now.
