Ga Dems Commemorate 78th Anniversary of
Social Security

Williams says Dems committed to protecting future generations 

Atlanta, Ga. - Aug. 14, 2013 - Georgia Democrats today are marking the 78th anniversary of the day President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, on August 14, 1935. Nikema Williams, interim chairwoman of Georgia's Democratic party issued the following statement:


"Seventy-eight years ago, we made a pledge to America's seniors that after a lifetime of hard work they would be able to retire with the dignity and security they had earned. Today, President Obama and the Democratic Party remain dedicated to protecting and strengthening Social Security for millions of present and future generations of America's seniors.

"Unfortunately, Republicans are not staying true to this sacred trust between seniors and our country.  Congressional Republicans' budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires could mean significant cuts to Social Security and would jeopardize benefits for future generations.  After all, this is a party who in recent years proposed privatizing Social Security and turning Medicare into a voucher program. 

"Here in Georgia, we have a choice: We can stand with the Republicans who are recklessly placing Social Security in jeopardy or we can stand with our seniors.

"On the 78th birthday of Social Security, we know the very last thing we ought to be doing is playing politics with the retirement security of millions of America's seniors.  President Obama has stood up for America's seniors since day one and we know he will continue fighting to strengthen and protect their hard-earned benefits."

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
