Avoid Mars Hill this week

DELAYS ON MARS HILL ROAD THIS WEEK

Watkinsville, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces new bridge beams for the Mars Hill Road Bridge over Barber Creek will be set in place Wednesday and Thursday, if weather cooperates.

“The plan is to set beams Wednesday and Thursday. We expect the beams setting to start about 10:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m., major delays are expected along Mars Hill Road. One lane of traffic over the Barber Creek Bridge will be closed while beams are set. Traffic will be allowed across the bridge one direction at a time guided by Flaggers. Each time a beam is hoisted into place, traffic will be completely stopped for about 10 minutes. Please avoid this section of Mars Hill Road if possible Wednesday and Thursday,” explained Brent Cook, Georgia DOT District Engineer serving Oconee County.

Each bridge beam is custom made like a puzzle piece that only fits in one place. Each beam is 128 feet long and six feet tall weighing 102,000 pounds. Six beams will be set this week. Nine more beams will be set later in the project to complete the bridge over Barber Creek.

The project will widen Mars Hill Road/Oconee Connector from State Route 316 to State Route 53/Hog Mountain Road improving mobility locally in Watkinsville and for the region in to and out of Clarke County. The new road will have four lanes that are 12 feet wide with a 20 feet wide grassy median. It will also have bike lanes and a sidewalk in each direction. As part of the project, a new bridge will be built over Barber Creek, replacing the existing bridge was built in 1944.

G.P.’s Enterprises of Auburn, Georgia is the Project’s Contractor. The contract completion date for this 3.299 mile long project is May 26, 2018. The contract cost is $26.3 million.
