Beaver to challenge Odom for BOE chair

Britt Beaver spends his day helping kids make the right choices.

As the lead
counselor at Anita White Carson Middle School in Greene County, Beaver
prepares students for collegiate studies and life in the workforce.

Beaver said his former students should not be surprised to see his name on the ballot May 24.

Beaver is running for the Board of Education chairman’s seat against incumbent Tom Odom.

Aside from a 2014 appointment that had nine
applicants, there have been few open seats on the BOE in recent years.
This year, for example, board members Wayne Bagley and Tim Burgess are
running unopposed. There will be another appointment to fill Mark
Thomas’ unexpired term.

Beaver has taught Georgia studies and American
political science. From 2007 to 2012, he was a head coach at Jackson
County High and before that he coached at North Oconee High and at
Oconee County Middle, near where he currently resides.

Beaver obtained a master’s degree in school
counseling from the University of West Alabama. His thesis was entitled,
“The role principals play in affecting teacher morale.”

He is also a peace officer certified by the
Northeast Georgia Police Academy. He and his wife, Jessica Beaver, have
two children: Amelia, 10 and Landon, 8. They attend Watkinsville First
Baptist Church, where he teaches Sunday school.

Beaver describes himself as a fiscal
conservative, or a “Reagan guy,” explaining that if elected, he promises
to vote on a budget that provides technological and classroom resources
to teachers, and most importantly, does not waste taxpayers’ dollars.
