Synovus in downtown Watkinsville closing

​sad to see this bank closing I love this bank, and it is the closest financial institution to my place of employment. We have an account or two or three there. All the employees are really nice and send me birthday cards and the whole nine yards. So I was very disappointed to receive a letter in the mail this morning telling me that they plan to close this branch permanently soon. I think that this is a loss not only for Watkinsville but for all of Oconee County as well. I hope at the very least that they will keep the Automatic Teller Machine there for the time being. I hope that they are not terminating any of their wonderful and personable employees. We do not need higher unemployment rates locally or statewide either. This former Athens First Bank and Trust (now Synovus) was a welcome addition to the landscape of businesses in downtown Watkinsville.  Synovus is keeping their Butler’s Crossing location open

Jeff Dantzler's arrests may be the best thing that ever happened to him

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. Any one who has listened to 960 the Ref AM sports talk radio or heard the UGA Lady Dawgs or men's baseball team has surely heard the encyclopedic knowledge of one Jeff Dantzler. Jeff and I are pretty much diametrically opposed poltically, but today he was arrested on four counts including DUI. I hope he gets the help he needs following his incarceration. I work for a lawyer who could help him out if he does not having someone already representing him. This man is a great broadcaster and I hope this arrest serves as a wake-up call for him and his rock and roll lifestyle. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
