Athens-Clarke homelessness and Oconee's answers to it
It has become increasingly routine to wake or otherwise disengage homeless people sleeping in alcoves, stoops, and semi-heated areas near doors of businesses in downtown Athens, Georgia. I call the non-emergency number at the Athens- Clarke County police in a nearly daily basis in a constant battle to get someone up from sleeping in the entrance to the building I work in (where there once was a homeless shelter). I wish there was more local shelters and people working with their hearts and minds to try to lessen the burden of the homeless here, and State Rep. Spencer Frye has put his money where his mouth is in working with Habitat for Humanity locally. There are various places for the homeless to get help including the Salvation Army shelters at 784 N.
