Oconee County, GA Politics

State Rep. Stacey Evans of Cobb County I was amazed at the overflow turn out at the Oconee County Democratic Committee, but given the fact that earlier in the week I was confirmed as the winner in the very close nonpartisan Watkinsville City Council by a two vote margin that withstood UOCAVA (three overseas votes of Watkinsville residents evidently went 2 to 1 for me), and then coupled with the lingering shock from the Presidential election, spurred a crowd where we had to get chairs at least a half dozen times from a nearby closet. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and I am honored to be the first Democrat elected in a long time in a contested race in Oconee County, Georgia, the reddest of the red counties has a blue dot on the map in the county seat of Watkinsville. The City of Watkinsville council members, including outgoing member Samantha Purcell in her next to last meeting, passed the business licenses for Joshua Johnson for Harjo Woodworking and for Tire Depot Services of Reynaldo Juarez, opening his second location outside of Milledgeville down by the Shell Station on Highway 15. Everything passed unanimously as usual with a new face on council, but one familiar to those in the audience. of longtime attendee Connie Massey making the transition to the tilt back chairs of the council members up there on the other side of the lectern. The City Council also graciously allowed Mr. Johnson to get added on the agenda at the last moment, and accepted the reconciliation report. City Council member Mike Link showed up late to the meeting at this point. City resident Antonio Rooks asked about how his considerable number of dogs and their tethering could result in his fines. Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry just called to let us know he will be addressing the Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting 7:00 pm Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Government Annex at 1291 Greensboro Highway along with Oconee County Board of Commissioners chairman Melvin Davis and candidate Tammy Gilland. We will expect no more than five more of oratory from the candidates and have a large gong set up to ring every time they mention the word "conservative" (just kidding about that last one). But the choice of words is always something I pay attention, along with diction and brevity. I would challenge the candidates to demonstrate to us their independence and difference from the standard Republican orthodoxy and perhaps make distinctions on their positions even from those who they are at the same meeting at. Then again, they could discuss American Idol or the Hatfields and McCoys if they really wanted to.

Once again the changes under new Watkinsville Mayor Charles Ivie do not seem to be that big a deal all by themselves, but when one begins to compile a list, it begins to seem more and more insidious to the casual observer.  But hey, he is entitled to run the city the way he wants to, at least until the voters decide otherwise. Now the agenda only appear in advance on the door of the Watkinsville Community Center. The Oconee County Democratic Committee will be meeting at Jittery Joe's in Watkinsville 7:00 pm Thursday, January 20th, 2010. On the agenda that evening will include a brief presentation from UGA journalism professor and local investigative blogger Lee Becker will talk about what issues Oconee County  residents hold dear and also former US Senate candidate R.J. Hadley of Conyers will be discussing his candidacy for the Vice Chair of County Parties for the Democratic Party of Georgia. There will be some brief business to attend to about who from Oconee County will be voting in the state convention in Warner Robins January 29.
