Charles E. Squires: Reinstate NOHS principal | Letters | OnlineAthens.com

On NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM this morning, Tim Bryant had on a couple of North Oconee High School parents giving their take on the Osborne fiasco. No great revelations except the public will not be allowed to speak in front of the Oconee County Board of Education until Sept. 21, a solid 10 days after the closed door personnel hearing Sept. 11 to decide Osborne's employment fate at North Oconee. Would you mind making a comment on my Letter to the Editor?

Even if you are not the biggest fan of Senator Barack Obama and his campaign to be the President of the United States, I would greatly appreciate your commentary of a Letter to the Editor I wrote appearing in today's - Thursday, January 31, 2008 - edition of the Athens Banner-Herald. So far the reactionary zealots have made me look like a member of Al-Qaeda for supporting Obama. You would think that we could evolve beyond such petty bickering and insubstantial name calling in this day and age. Any help is greatly appreciated. Have a nice day and see you tonight?

Diane Cronin writes the BEST LETTER TO THE EDITOR EVER!!!!

Diane Cronin is a concerned homeowner in the Eastern part of Oconee County, much closer to the river than Watkinsville. She has battled clear-cutting developers tearing virgin forests and rare old growth tree thickets to no avail, but now she has State Representative Bob Smith in her sight . Her rage stems from Smith's approach to the exceptional and historic drought crisis, which is give back to landscapers the right to water the lawns. Even the slightly yellowed lawn at Athens Academy's Slaughter football field has survived the drought and frost reasonably well. Now I do not know if the fine landscapers at Athens Academy or elsewhere have used lake water or gray water to keep their fields and lawns reasonably hydrated. I hope no more area landscapers have to deal with the drought to the point of going out of business, but I also know the plans for the Charmar closing were in works for years. Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties are forever joined at the hip legislatively, ec...

unabridged version of letter Bill Paul wrote to the Enterprise

Watkinsville and Oconee County historic sites [Vinnie Williams, Oconee Enterprise, 9/27/07, p. A3] are not drawing tourists because their destruction is being encouraged by those who should be fighting tooth and nail to save these special places. Word gets around quickly and the public wants no part of it. The guilty parties are developers who don’t care and their supporters in the city and county governments. Those folks seemly have no vision of what should be protected, how to do it, and what the public really wants. Are they deaf? The gateway charm at the intersection of Barnett Shoals Road and Main Street in Watkinsville has been replaced by some out-of-scale ‘thing’ which comes close to a spaghetti western stage set. The wonderfully wide sidewalks in downtown Watkinsville have been replaced by parking spaces. Now the sidewalks are so narrow that two people can’t pass each other without turning sideways. Who thought that improvement up? And then, there are those unfortunate t...
