I love campaigning for Mayor - will you now please vote for Dan Matthews?

Image
Watkinsville deserves a Mayor who knows the issues, who knows what has been done, and knows yet what needs to be done.  Please give me the chance to prove it to you with your ultimate seal of approval by voting for Matthews for Mayor Tuesday or before. I love campaigning because I enjoy conversing with the voters about the issues, and learn more from the voters every day. Watkinsville will have a new mayor and to me, it is is a question of vision for the future or glimpses of the past. It is about knowledge of what the current council has been doing, how they have been doing it, and what they have yet to get done. It is about respecting the decisions of the city council even they disagree with the wishes of the candidates for Mayor. It is about walking the streets, riding on bikes, finding the cracks in the curbs and infrastructure, and knowing the lay of the land. I have worked to keep Watkinsville clean and beautiful, picking up road debris around the intersection of Main Str...

....or University of Oconee, or otherwise sever ties with the Hall County campus as quickly as possible and offer as many four year degrees that the University of Georgia does not. Go for the specialty degrees like Hospital Management and other areas not currently offered in Athens. Expand the campus across the street if you must, but at least have a decent array of collegiate degrees. Dr. Penny Mills   Dr. Margaret Venable ( t hanks Steve Smith ) and the fine folks on Bishop Farms Parkway have done an outstanding job under constantly overcrowded circumstances, and they deserve their own branding and identity. This would be another of my top priorities upon taking office at the House of Representatives for the 113th House District. I would also work together with the DOT and Oconee County to make sure the rear access to campus is done as seamlessly as possible, and I would work as a liaison between the City of Watkinsville and the DOT to make sure there is a transfer of prop...

Municipal election voting opens in Bogart and North High Shoals

In a post I totally stole from Jay Hanley's article in the Oconee Enterprise, early voting started for the municipal elections in North High Shoals and Bogart. The following sentences were lifted directly from his article, and I hope I have not violated the ethics of the interwebs. I give all credit and attribution to Jay, Maridee, Miss Vinnie, and the Oconee Enterprise newspaper Voters are deciding two contested council posts: Post 3, which is a vacant seat and Post 4, which is held by Fred Johnson, who is not running for re-election. Candidates for the Post 3 seat are David Lawrence and Scott A. Wilson. Post 4 candidates include Stephen J. Arnold and Sarah G. Donegan. The top two vote-getters among four candidates: John Larkin, Pam McNair, Weyman Steed and incumbent Michael Ward will take the seats, which have a term of four years.

Advance municipal voting commences in Watkinsville smoothly

I was about the 20th person to vote yesterday at the Watkinsville Community Center in the lone contested municipal election in the race between incumbent local car wash co-owner and former police officer/code enforcement officer Joe Walter and challenger Luke Bishop. Once again I voted for Joe Walter without hesitation, and I would suggest Mr. Bishop best set his sights on the Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners in his next attempt at political office, if he is so moved. Current city council members Samantha Purcell and Mike Link are also on the ballot unopposed. You can get in and out of there in about five minutes top. This is the second time I had to advance vote in two different places in one election (in separate races obviously) but it went smoothly and quickly and I give high marks to the wonderful people at the Watkinsville City Hall and Community Center for effectively making it easier to vote in advance of the November 4th general election.

Here is one place to go vote early this week in Watkinsville

Image
I voted this morning and strongly urge you to do so as well, taking full advantage of the early voting period here in Oconee County. This is the location next to the courthouse in downtown Watkinsville, and there is a new location to vote early at the Oconee County Civic Center on Hog Mountain Road/State Route 53. The early voting period ends Friday afternoon with no early voting Monday followed by the traditional Tuesday election day at the various polling places scattered across the county.
