Community Book Group selection for July

Image
The community book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is reading  the Pulitzer Prize-winning " Pilgrim at Tinker Creek " for our July book. The author, Annie Dillard, characterizes the book simply as "narrative  non-fiction," while reviewers describe this lovely classic about the  natural world as "masterful" and a "book of wonder." Copies are available at Books Galore in Watkinsville for a 25% discount  (though you should call first to see if copies remain before you head  out to buy one: 706/769-1443). The group will meet in the "glass room" at the Oconee County library  this month. That's on your right as soon as you enter the building. We always meet the last Wednesday of each month. We'll meet at 6:30 PM  -- on Wednesday, July 27th. Participants hail from several different counties. Newcomers are always  welcomed! Happy Independence Day weekend! Pat Priest

Global warming book for June discussion

Image
__,_._,___ The community book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is reading  James Hansen's "Storms of My Grandchildren " for June. It's an important  book about the evidence for global climate change and scientists' dogged  efforts to get the word out about this looming catastrophe. The author, Dr. James Hansen, is going to be a call-in guest for the  local progressive radio show "True South" on June 18th (Saturdays from  10-11 AM on News/Talk 1340 WGAU). We're excited about that! (I produce  that show with hosts Russell Edwards and my husband, Neal.) "True South" is partnering with the Oconee Democrats' book group to get  people together to talk about global climate change. The show has issued  a challenge to people who are global climate skeptics, offering a free  book to the first two who contact us at the show. We hope new people  will join us (though, truth be told, it's sometimes a challenging book  because of all...

Free program this evening at Oconee Library involving reptiles and amphibians

Hello, fellow Democrats! Tonight's free and family-friendly event at the Oconee library should be interesting and fun. Students from UGA's Herpetological Society will bring reptiles and amphibians for people to learn about and handle. The young scientists will also talk about hibernation and provide suggestions about things we can do in our own backyards to help native wildlife. The community book group's book for March is "The Killer Angels," a great Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Battle of Gettysburg. It's a quick read, too! That's Wednesday, March 30th, at 7 PM at the Taco Stand in the Publix Shopping Center in Watkinsville. Both events have been organized by the Oconee Democrats. We want to show what we care about: science, nature, history, conversation, families, and more! Join us! Pat Priest

September book discussion

Conservative author and historian Andrew Bacevich teaches at Boston University where my sister Emily is taking advanced Italian. A reminder that you do not have to live in Oconee, or be a Democratic supporter, to be in the book group, but it could not hurt if you were. Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 11:05:49 -0400 Subject: [oconee] September book discussion   The book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is discussing " The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism " for our September book. The author, the well-regarded conservative historian Andrew Bacevich, is a professor at Boston University, where he teaches history and international relations. In the book, Bacevich takes up problems with the American military, the nation's political system, and what he describes as an unchecked "profligacy" in the culture. The Washington Post argued that Bac...

Oconee Democratic Book Club April book selection: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

Image
I applaud the selections, the authors, the audacity of a group bold enough to try to spread ideas of liberty and freedom through literature, and anyone with the balls to try to expand the literacy of an otherwise backwoods country county with a bunch of people meeting in a deli to compare notes on books they love or do not care for and why. Go check it out in the Oconee County Library. Click on the links and order the book and I may actually see a few pennies someday out of your purchase. Subject: April book selection Hello! Could you please help me get the word out about the book choice for our April discussion?  We're reading the classic "Catch 22." I really appreciate your assistance.  Our group keeps growing and is increasingly diverse. Thank you!
