Suggestions for Oconee Veterans Park

I have not been making as many original posts recently because I am coaching my son Lowell's under 12 soccer team in the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department. Some soccer god has a sick sense of humor since their team nickname is the Grizzlies, which I guess makes me a papa Grizzly and somewhere Sarah Palin is smiling. Anyhow after the first game, a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Panthers, a few quick observations and suggestions: Have recycling bins/cans on the soccer pitch. Most of these kids are drinking Gatorade, Powerade and what not, and they can be easily recycled. Curbside of Bogart might even do it for free if we give them the free publicity, but I cannot speak for them. Coaches get real tired of schlepping used drink containers to trash cans after hard fought losses.  Have the Oconee County Sheriff's Department (or some other civilian or police force) keeping traffic on Highway 53/Hog Mountain Road coming out of Oconee Veterans Park and the across the stre...

Homecoming parade will disrupt Main Street traffic in Watkinsville tonight

I would strongly urge all motorists to avoid downtown Watkinsville this evening during the Oconee County High School homecoming parade. The exact time eludes me but I would wager it shall be difficult to traverse Barnett Shoals or Main Street from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm or thereabouts.

Bike to Work day May 21

Please be considerate and give plenty of room to bicyclists commuting to and from work. I saw my friend and Watkinsville City Council member Brian Brodrick biking up dangerously narrow Simonton Bridge Road last night and I always give any bike rider plenty of room when I drive by and feel guilty burning diesel in my big red pick up truck. Also drivers please be extra wary of large turtles and armadillos not to mention bicyclists. I have heard tell or seen dead two of each recently in my repeated commute. I was very pleased to see my thoughtful mail carrier Bob Mason go well out of his way Tuesday to pick up and move a huge snapping turtle and move it across the road, only to see a bigger than football sized shell smashed somewhere between Morgan Manor Estates and Taylors Landing subdivisions soon thereafter on the other side of Simonton Bridge/Whitehall Road. Brian and Tony Glenn told me there was another large smashed turtle or tortoise shell up by the cemetery closer to downtown Watk...

2009 Fall Activities

Image
Be patient with parking, access and egress at Oconee Veterans Park and the neighboring Herman C. Michael park tonight and most week nights for the next month and a half or so. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. From: tlathrup@oconee.ga.us To: danmatt@hotmail.com Date: Mon, 14 Sep 2009 11:22:22 -0700 Subject: 2009 Fall Activities Greetings, Receipt of this e-mail indicates you are a parent of one of the approximately 1250 kids involved in one of the seven OCPRD fall 2009 youth programs. We sincerely hope that not only your childrens, but your whole family's experience this season will be rewarding and fun. With such a large number of children and families involved in fall activities it can make for some busy practice and game days often filling our parks to capacity. Add in over 400 kids from Oconee County Little League and the Oconee Futbol League soccer group who also utilize our fields and it is easy to see how gym and field space become quickly limited. Today mar...

Update on Two Roadways from Lee Becker at Oconee County Observations plus meaningless award from me

With recent residential transplant and Safe as Houses blogger Johnathan McGinty jumping the shark to Tondee's Tavern today, I nominate Lee Becker as Oconee Blogger of the Year. Here is just a little more from UGA PR prof Becker who helped battle the Oconee County government on any number of fronts, including the Barber Creek and numerous development skirmishes. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lee Becker < lbbecker@mindspring.com > Date: Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:37 AM Subject: Update on Two Roadways To: lbbecker@mindspring.com Dear Friends, I've just posted a story on my blog about the twists and turns the Board of Commissioners went through to justify rezoning on Dec. 2 the piece of property just east of the blind curve on Daniells Bridge Road for an office building. What isn't so clear is why the Board wanted to make these twists and turns, though the hope for more development in the area seems to be a part of it. For details, go to my blog at ht...
