Looking for help

The Oconee County Historical Society and the DAR will be sponsoring a float in the Watkinsville Christmas Parade December 4.  We plan to have people in historical costume accompanying the float to hand out 'old fashioned' candies and a flyer.  The flyer will have information about the society, some historical information about Christmas trees and we hope information about the upcoming campaign to restore the chairs in the auditorium at Central School House. We need folks willing to help with the candy and fliers.  Do not worry about the 'historical costume' part.  The history that the society covers goes from the beginnings of settlement in the area up to the present day so thinking of a costume might not be as difficult as you think.  If you need help with ideas we will help you figure out something.  Please let me know if you are willing to join in the fun. Peggy

Scenes from this year's Watkinsville Christmas Parade

Image
I rode my semi-recumbent with neighbors Jimmy and Liz Marbut along with their son Seth and daughter Bailey and assorted Sunshine Cycles friends and cyclists - including uni-cyclists, trick riding BMX dudes and a couple of scooters and smaller kids. I think this was at least my fourth parade with my son participating in one way or the other. A little cold at first, but we survived. Thanks for coming to Watkinsville and please pick up all the candy. I pedaled around the corner and down the street and saw lots of friends with dogs and children. It was a great time for all if not a little chilly. The sun came out and we were lucky to be number 25 in line. Most of all the thanks go to all the volunteer firefighters and police who help bring in several thousand visitors in the smallest of citiies. How some of those floats made the corner on to First Street was beyond me.  Mayor Jim Luken was a very deserving Parade marshall in his last year at the helm in Watkinsville. I do hop...

Oconee County Cycling Organization- Update and news

Christmas parade invitation for Saturday 11:00 am (or slightly before then) with my neighbor Jimmy Marbut. Woven brightly,  Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. From: smkogan@uga.edu To: smkogan@uga.edu Subject: Oconee County Cycling Organization- Update and news Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2009 14:41:15 -0500 Happy Holidays to all! The Oconee County Cycling Organization's developmental board is continuing to meet and pushing forward on establishing a formal advocacy group. Progress continues on all fronts: incorporating the group, planning member benefits, and planning a kick-off membership drive. Steve Kogan will serve as Vice-President as Jim Shanni is busy working with the legal foundation of our group. We would also like to note that this Saturday, Jimmy Marbut from Sunshine Cycles has invited cyclists of all ages to participate in the Watkinsville Christmas Parade. We hope you consider coming. His email is below: hey folks, I wanted to invite you to come out this Saturday a...

Wanted: MORE Democratic candidates for public office in Oconee County and the 10th District of Georgia

The Oconee County Democratic Committee met once again this evening, and it is basically the same set of folks lamenting our lack of candidates for the same set of offices time and time again. Who would like to run against semi-permanently entrenched incumbents State Representative Bob Smith or Congressman Paul Broun? We will help you run, canvass, campaign and host events for your campaign. Many interesting names get tossed around at meetings such as these, and frustrations can sometimes bare fruit. All the yard sales and Adopt-a-Road clean ups cannot create one candidate if the local churches still shun us like lepers, so the idea of a church tour (or garden tour or home tour or history tour) was discussed well into the night. The more outreach in to the actual community, the better for all concerned. More than $1,000.00 was raised by some 16 people on both sides of the aisle during the successful Saturday Stroll series. Nearly than much again was raised during two soggy Saturda...

Saxon visits with Oglethorpe Democrats; helps Oconee Democrats deliver Christmas greetings to Veterans

Image
Oconee native and 10th district Democratic congressional candidate Bobby Saxon helped county parties in Oglethorpe and Oconee counties this week with an appearance scheduled in Lexington Thursday and used his Veteran experience to good work by directing the Oconee County Democratic Committee where to properly address their Christmas cards to get them to our troops in hospitals in Augusta and elsewhere. The Oconee County Democratic committee intends to hand out pre-addressed Christmas cards to parade attendees to mail at home or at the post office during the Watkinsville Christmas parade Saturday morning along Barnett Shoals and Main Street past the Eagle Tavern.

Oconee Democrats remember Veterans at Chirstmas time

Oconee Democrats invite county residents to remember a veteran at this special time of year. Contact: Becky Vaughn becky@beckyvaughn.org At the Christmas parade in Watkinsville on December 1st, the Oconee County Democrats will be handing out to parade spectators Christmas cards that have been pre-addressed to reach veterans at V.A. Hospitals in Augusta and Atlanta. The cards include instructions the hospitals require to ensure delivery to patients. Becky Vaughn, the chair of the Oconee Democrats, said, "We wanted to make it easy to send a note of thanks and good cheer to the men and women who have served our country so bravely. The theme of the parade is 'We wish you a Merry Christmas,' and we hope that people along the parade route will take this opportunity to extend their wishes to veterans hospitalized during the holidays."
