Oconee County Courthouse by any other Name

Slowly but surely a new Courthouse becomes an increasing certainty in Watkinsville, no matter what it is called. I understand the cramped quarters in the current Courthouse but would still support an attempt at sharing/renting/leasing/owning/buying/condemning some of the vacant business and residential properties nearby the current Courthouse rather than mortgage our future for an entirely new Courthouse location. Thanks as always to Lee Becker for his excellent reporting. The gist of his reporting is that next week the meeting of the Land Use and Transportation Committee will be overshadowed by the two higher profile meetings of Congressman Paul Broun's townhall Tuesday morning at the Civic Center and the Oconee County Board of Education's personnel matter concerning the immensely unpopular termination of Principal John Osborne, From: Lee Becker ; lbbecker@mindspring.com > Date: Thu, Sep 3, 2009 at 11:06 PM Subject: Courthouse by Another Name To: lbbecker@mindsprin...

President Obama wants you to visit Congressman Paul Broun's office

I recently received a letter asking me to go and visit Dr. Paul Broun at this office in Athens. The following is the text of that letter asking me to go and visit Dr. Paul Broun to have your own town hall meeting in Bogart on Broad Street. All throughout August, our members of Congress are back in town. Insurance companies and partisan attack groups are stirring up fear with false rumors about the President's plan, and it's extremely important that folks like you speak up now. So we've cooked up an easy, powerful way for you to make a big impression: Office Visits for Health Reform. All this week, OFA members like you will be stopping by local congressional offices to show our support for insurance reform. You can have a quick conversation with the local staff, tell your personal story, or even just drop off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you. We'll provide everything you need: the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information abo...

Congressman Broun won't save his hometown Ag Center

I vomited in my own mouth when I heard NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM's Tim Bryant being manipulated by State Senator and Congressional wannabe Barry Fleming today on his Fleming's many arrows and barbs, but it set the tone for the nasty words rising faster than the gas prices. Fleming did blast Broun about not wanting to save the Ag Research Center in Athens. Nice try Barry. The J. Phil Campbell Jr center is only in Watkinsville, not Athens, and if you think there is a big stink between folks from Augusta and Athens in the Whitehead meltdown last year, wait to you hear some folks from Oconee and Clarke going at it. Broun won't go to bat to try and get some congressional pork to save the agriculture facility. That pretty much decides it that I cannot vote for Broun ever again. If you are going to play on the team, you need to know the rules The gist of Fleming's phlegm this time was that Broun wants to do bong hits with your kids and sell porn pictures of them as well. Of cour...

Oconee County HS graduate Bobby Saxon announces he is running against Broun

A Democratic war veteran living in Jackson County announced he will run against Dr. Paul Broun for the 10th district congressional seat in 2008 . This candidate Bobby Saxon was first revealed to me in the days before Marlow and friends got in the race when it looked like it still looked like it was going to be Republicans Ralph Hudgins versus Barry Fleming for the seat by a reliable source.

Don't cry for me Evita - need a scorecard for the 10 candidates in the 10th? We've got one

Number of hopefuls for seat reaches 10 By Sylvia Cooper | Staff Writer Thursday, March 01, 2007 Augusta Attorney Evita Paschall announced her candidacy for the 10th Congressional District seat Wednesday, becoming the 10th candidate and second Democrat to say she will run in the June 19 special election. Ms. Paschall, 55, has practiced law in Augusta for 31 years, beginning her career in the Richmond County District Attorney's office after graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1976. She went into private practice with Carl Brown - now an Augusta Judicial Circuit Superior Court judge - in 1979 before opening her own practice in 1981. She has served as an assistant solicitor in Richmond County State Court and solicitor of Richmond County Civil and Magistrate Court. In 1992, she was appointed judge of Augusta Recorder's Court, which was abolished when the city an...

Gov., SOS set June 19th date for Special Election - or have they?

I guess the Governor and Secretary of State can ignore state law when setting a special election date. We have been led to believe that the Governor had 10 days after the death of 10th district Congressman Dr. Charlie Norwood to choose an election date that had to come some 30 days after that. Well the last part of the calendar has been swept under the rug so that announced GOP candidates Ralph Hudgers and John Whitehead don't have to resign their seats during this term of the General Assembly in Atlanta. 30 days from today would be March 23, but again, the Republicans have a way of avoiding the law and paying not attention to precedent when they find it convenient. Terry Holley will run and perhaps the extra time will give him more of a chance. According to Tim Bryant right now, Governor has not set the date yet. AJC reporters quoted Hudgens and the Georgia News Network reported it as fact, which has yet to happen, according to Newstalk 1340 WGAU AM. Hudgens wants to serve out hi...
