Updates on a variety of things in Watkinsville and Oconee County, Georgia

The Oconee Veterans Park gymnasium basketball court appears to be in a whole lot better condition today despite the dozen or so dust bunny clumps I picked up by hand. Also my son has a better jump shot than me in the game of H-O-R-S-E, and I had to resort to the Troy Brewer two handed set shot to even stay close. He convinced himself he could not do a Dr. J reverse spin from one side of the hoop while your body is on the other side shot, but he made it. It is the basketball equivalent of magic, and you do feel truly like a wizard the first time you use it successfully on a drive. * * * Glad the Watkinsville Town Council unanimously approved the new beer and wine pouring license for Mirko Pasta, presenting a positive profile for any potential restaurant owner looking at the old and huge Maison Bleu space. I would think this would make a perfect location for a caterer/restauranteur needing to make tons of pastries, cakes, hors d'oeuvres,  et cetera for your special event at the n...

Brief Cases: The Overlook atop Town Center gets great new management with the co-owners of Ashford Manor B&B| Business | OnlineAthens.com

Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast continues to have a profound influence on the economic present and future of Watkinsville, Georgia. Well done Mario and Dave. Essentially this is across Main Street from their Victorian Abode but a logical extension of their burgeoning local empire. Shishkabobby's needs a few more weeks to get its flow going

Every new restaurant takes some time get its patterns established. Any time you come in a new place before it has figured out how to do the little things, while still figuring out how to do the big things, you run the risk of being on the shorter end of the learning curve. Such was our experience this evening at the new Town Center restaurant in Watkinsville called Shishkabobby's, or "Barberitos on a stick" as I like to call it. The set up and the cilantro seem the same at least. David Weeks, the beleaguered chairman-elect of the Oconee County Board of Education and ill-advised pimp for State Senator Bill Cowsert's re-election advertising, has his hands full with his media onslaught, and I do not imagine we will be seeing Dr. Thomas Dohrmann eating in there any time soon. Simple improvements would include wiping down the tables more regularly and not when people are eating next to them. Have some examples of the finished product for people to see. Are we getting a sk...

New Shishkabobby restaurant coming to Town Center in Watkinsville soon

Although the last time I peered through the window and door of the former Gautreau's Restaurant location it looked weeks from being open, I eagerly anticipate the opening of the new Shishkabobby's Grille restaurant in my neighborhood where my son and I can go eat and enjoy our selection. I would imagine this will be one of those places where you can order your skewer with whatever meat or vegetable you want to and either watch it prepared or maybe even cook it at your table (although that would probably make the insurance bills skyrocket). Whatever the verdict, you can attend this week's Watkinsville City Council meeting and watch owner David Weeks, yes the same of the head of the Board of Education and owner of a Barberitos here in the county, come get his license for a new restaurant in town. Here is the rest of the agenda for the meeting: AGENDA CITY OF WATKINSVILLE September 10, 2008 CALL TO ORDER QUORUM CHECK WATKINSVILLE BEAUTIFUL YA...
