Crowded GOP field fights for Broun’s seat

Image
For the past seven years, this northeast Georgia district has been represented by U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, whose outspoken conservatism and reputation as a frequent “no” vote earned him national attention. The race to replace him, though, has been anything but a contest to take up his mantle. Broun is running for the U.S. Senate, and his family name — his father was a longtime state senator who represented a part of Athens — still carries weight. Yet in debates and at events, only one of the crowded field of seven Republicans seems eager to trade on Broun’s name. Georgia politics and government Instead, it’s a muddied fight with no clear front-runner among candidates trying to build their name recognition and burnish their GOP credentials ahead of the May 20 primary. Awaiting them is Democrat Ken Dious , an Athens lawyer who is his party’s nominee for an upset in thi...

The dynamics of the first husband-wife ticket in Georgia politics and Pete's opposing (?) Flagpole viewpoint

The AJC's excellent writer Jim Galloway's take on the Carol Porter and DuBose Porter political ticket for Georgia. Good quotes and links giving the Michael Thurmond and Casey Cagle positions as well. Pete McCommons of Flagpole seems to like that Mike has announced to him (and seemingly no one else) for Lt. Governor. Post Election analysis by AJC, ABH

I was disappointed in the total turnout for the State of Georgia going down from the previous Presidential Election. Blake Aued writes about the Athens area turnout and quotes my friend Laura Floyd in Oglethorpe County (hope they had a great parade yesterday). They still have local elected officials in Oglethorpe of the Democratic persuasion. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Aaron Gould Sheinin had an article about the gains Georgia Democratic Party members made through out the state with the infrastructure in place for more gains in future elections . I found the accompanying map to be very interesting.

Predictions from all kinds of Georgians, including at least two local folks

This is the result of a long series of email exchanges, but it was fun and I was happy to contribute. I can remember being huddled at the end of the stairwell in my pajamas watching a crowd of people up our stairs raising their hands for George McGovern on a cold night in 1972. We had a "raucous caucus" according to the Des Moines Register and Tribune newspaper at the time and thus was born yet another nickname from Coach McGuire. We had people packed into every corner of our stucco house on the hill in the middle of Snake Drive.
