Join us on Wednesday the 29th to discuss the thought-provoking book "Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power" by Rachel Maddow. There is a LOT to talk (and worry!) about. Oconee Democrats' book for July ~ Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

Image
Reply-To: oconee@yahoogroups.com Geraldine Brooks' "Caleb's Crossing" is on tap for the July discussion of the Oconee Democrats' book group. It's based on a real person: the first Native American to attend -- and graduate from -- Harvard  . . . in 1665. Lynn Neary of NPR included the book in a short list of the best book club picks of 2011 (though I didn't know this when I chose it!) -- and characterized the works on the list as "sure to catalyze serious and lively conversation." She describes the book as a "satisfying but sobering look at the early days of this country . . .  a great pick for lovers of historical fiction." Many people really love the Australian-born author, who won the Pulitzer Prize for an earlier book ("March"). Our group meets at Piccolo's restaurant in the Bell's shopping center in Watkinsville at 7 PM the last Wednesday of each month. Some of us arrive at about...

From: Pat Priest < ppriest@charter.net Date: June 10, 2012 1:08:16 PM EDT To: Oconee County Democrats oconee@yahoogroups.com Subject: [oconee] Oconee Democrats' book for June Reply-To: oconee@yahoogroups.com   Hello! This month the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will discuss "Death of a Salesman" -- on Wednesday, June 27th. I read that the playwright, Arthur Miller, chose Willy Loman's name to evoke the idea of the low man on the totem pole. It's been interesting to revisit this classic play, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. The group meets at Piccolo's restaurant in the Bell's shopping center in Watkinsville at 7 PM the last Wednesday of each month. Some of us arrive at about 6:30 to order dinner or drinks. I've met some of the most interesting people in the area because of our common love of books. New people join us all the time, so don't ...

Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is the Oconee Democrats book of the month club selection Wednesday at Piccolo's Restaurant at Butler's Crossing

Hello! On May 30th the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will  discuss "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The book, written by Rebecca Skloot, is a New York Times best seller  that's been on many best-of lists. Henrietta Lacks was a black woman  whose cells became integral to scientific discovery -- though her  offspring cannot afford medical care. We believe as Democrats in the importance of science and justice! The group meets at Piccolo's restaurant in the Bell's shopping center in  Watkinsville at 7 PM the last Wednesday of each month. Some people  arrive about 6:30 to order dinner or drinks and to chat. The group is pretty diverse, including folks from 3 different counties  -- and even a Republican! Drop in sometime for a fine conversation. Pat Priest Member, Oconee Democrats

Hope you're out enjoying this lovely day -- if you're lucky, without neighbors' raucous power tools drowning out the peace and quiet. I'm writing to suggest that you join us! The community book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will discuss the classic "Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin on April 25th. The book should be especially interesting to talk about in light of the recent, tragic death of Trayvon Martin. The group meets the last Wednesday of every month at Piccolo's, a pleasant restaurant in the Bell's shopping center in Watkinsville. The discussion gets underway at 7, with some of us arriving at 6:30...

For those of you around during the holidays, the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will meet on Wednesday, December 28th, to discuss a book added for people with a little extra time to read during the holidays: "The Art of Racing in the Rain." Some folks gather at 6:30 to order dinner or a drink before the discussion gets underway at 7 PM.
