Leaf vacuum is down in Watkinsville

Be prepared for leaves to hang out a little while longer at your curb in Watkinsville. The Street Department will get it soon. Sincerely,  Dan Matthews The City's leaf vacuum is down for repair.  We are hoping to have it back from the repair shop by the end of this week.  In the meantime, the Street Department is loading leaves left by the side of the road by hand.  Though a slow and inefficient method, which puts us behind on our normal pickup schedule, we are endeavoring to pick up as many piles as possible.  Please bear with us during this period of no leaf vacuum.  Thank you.    Julie A. How Should We Deal with the National Debt?  An Oconee Community Forum Conversation  Russell Forum for Civic Life in Georgia  Host Oconee Community Forum on the National Debt Sunday, November 13, 2011 3-5 p.m. Oconee Public Library Auditorium 1080 Experiment Station Rd. Watkinsville , Georgia According to Congressional Budget Office , the federal government closed out fiscal year 2011 with an estimated deficit of $1.3 trillion--the third straight year that the deficit exceeded a trillion dollars.  The current total of all accumulated U.S. budget deficits is $14.8 trillion and accounts for 8.6% of the size of the overall economy.  Have you ever wondered how much of that $14 trillion+ debt is on your shoulders now or on the shoulders of your kids in the future? Currently, every American’s share of the national debt and unfunded liabilities like Medicare and Social Security is $184,000 and climbing. If we do nothing to solve this ballooning debt, the federal ...

Distressing to have to defend my family from scurrilous rumor mongering

As anyone who has met and talked to me for more than five minutes can routinely attest to, I am a red blooded American 48-year-old heterosexual male. I guess that my 12 year old son was not a big enough give away for some of our more narrow-minded gossip deprived bigots. I am responding to a rumor reported to me by a contemporary who heard from his father that some rather frightened right wing elements of our community were busy engaging in a smear campaign questioning my sexuality. First of all, as if it is any of anyone's business what my sexual preference is or is not, and second of all, what difference would it be as to how one might govern? Do we really have to descend to this level of attack? This is yet another last second personal political ploy to distract and divide us, instead of reaching some kind of consensus about which candidate knows more about the issues that matter to Watkinsville residents every day. Some elderly residents have told me they are voting for me,...
