Tour of historic structures augments Touch A Truck event at Heritage Park

Image
The Oconee County Historical Society hosted free tours of three structures including the breathtakingly well preserved school house with new tin roof and a fresh coat of paint at Heritage Park Saturday during the Oconee County Recreation and Park Department's extremely successful "Touch A Truck" event Saturday below Farmington.  Tractor rides were given with large donation buckets not seeing nearly enough action for this history minor's preference. At one time several years back I was on a volunteer residents Historic Sites and Tourism committee tasked to find the perfect footprint for this school's relocation, which made national news coverage at the time. There were all kinds of hassles over methane pipes from former landfills as to exactly where and how close to the road and I am glad we are not still in meetings trying to figure out the best place to leave it. The Oconee County Historical Society gave tours of the three structures at Heritage Park in Sou...

Report on Heritage Park discussions from Oconee County Historical Society

Let's make sure Heritage Park gets done correctly and we do not have another Elder Mill Park shrinkage or shrivel. Subject: report on Heritage Park discussions On February 9,  Richard and I met with the Citizen Advisory Committee on Recreation Affairs Subcommittee on the   History   Village   at   Heritage   Park . Also present were representatives from the Cultural & tourism committee, Economic Development and this Historical Society. There were 5 items of discussion that we were asked to get input on from our various groups.  Those items were the (1) types of historical structures to be included (2) Where to put them in the area of the park designated for the   History   Village   (3) The current Park Master plan (specifically 'Do we need a pond?' (4) What time period should the village cover if any (5) Funding options We would like your input on these items before our next meeting the end of March.  You can e-mail comment...

Travelling circus hosts rare acts and unusual professions - Variety

I am a little conflicted about the circus coming to town (or county). I believe they are certainly entitled to make their living, but I just wish they would take better care of their animal acts. There have been a bazillion free tickets floating around so I can only imagine how many other things they are going to hawk on the grounds of the Heritage Park near Farmington this week. This article is in today's Red and Black newspaper on campus at UGA. Travelling circus hosts rare acts and unusual professions - Variety

Central School house another example of BOC bait and switch

Image
The Central School house was moved a couple miles down the road to Heritage Park a few years back too Heritage Park and it created a positive buzz of national media notoriety for Oconee County. Now the lack of action by the Board of Commissioners in the planning and budgeting for this facility is appalling but just more evidence of the disdainful practice of supporting something on the surface but denying important funds and infrastructure behind the scenes. Can't really call this lip service per se, but more of a bait and switch approach to appearing supportive to some thing that would be almost impossible to oppose, then behind the scenes making sure nothing gets appropriated or done on the project. The proposed park around Elder Mill Covered Bridge is another example of saying one thing and doing another.
