March for Our Lives Rally 11 am - 1 pm Saturday, March 24 at OVP

Image
"March for Our Lives Rally” will be held at 11 am – 1 pm, Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Pavilion in Oconee Veterans Park, 3500 Hog Mountain Road, in support of thousands of high school students across Georgia and the nation who are insisting that lawmakers everywhere put an end to the mass killings of school children. The event is sponsored by the Oconee County Democratic Committee. We invite the public to offer its sympathy for the slain and support for young students everywhere as they seek solutions to school violence. Jonathan Wallace and Deborah Gonzalez, Georgia House Representatives from Districts 119 and 117, respectively, will offer brief remarks in support of the goals young students are seeking, as will Chalis Montgomery and Richard Winfield, candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives in the Democratic Primary in May. Several high school students will speak as well, and civic leaders in the county have also been invited to attend and addre...

Select Football League Tryout Date Change

Changing the dates and registration times at the last second (relatively speaking) is not the best way to start a Select Football team, but I understand the necessity with the conflict with the Little League tournament. We were first in line to get equipment Friday evening at Herman C. Michael Park.  I hope Trevor and the gang have state championship level teams, and I do wish the OCYFL team would merge for this team if nothing else. Sincerely,  Dan Matthews From: tross@oconee.ga.us To: danmatt@hotmail.com Date: Fri, 18 May 2012 13:56:34 -0700 Subject: Select Football League Tryout Date Change! Due to the recent schedule changes to the Little League end of season games and post season tournaments, there is a direct conflict for all Little League players to attend the Select Football tryouts.  Given the importance of a thorough evaluation, we have moved the tryouts to Tuesday May 29 th and Thursday May  31 st at 6:30 at Oconee Veter...

Suggestions for Oconee Veterans Park

I have not been making as many original posts recently because I am coaching my son Lowell's under 12 soccer team in the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department. Some soccer god has a sick sense of humor since their team nickname is the Grizzlies, which I guess makes me a papa Grizzly and somewhere Sarah Palin is smiling. Anyhow after the first game, a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Panthers, a few quick observations and suggestions: Have recycling bins/cans on the soccer pitch. Most of these kids are drinking Gatorade, Powerade and what not, and they can be easily recycled. Curbside of Bogart might even do it for free if we give them the free publicity, but I cannot speak for them. Coaches get real tired of schlepping used drink containers to trash cans after hard fought losses.  Have the Oconee County Sheriff's Department (or some other civilian or police force) keeping traffic on Highway 53/Hog Mountain Road coming out of Oconee Veterans Park and the across the stre...

Oconee Veterans Park protest draws 150 people

Does anyone else recognize the irony of anti-tax group taking government paved roads to a government paid facility to protest the actions and annual payment for our government? I hate paying taxes just as much as the most red faced or neck people who did not have to work yesterday in Oconee Veterans Park. I did read the speech of Oconee County G.O.P. chair Jay Hanley and it was very welcoming, polite, and not the least bit inflammatory or incendiary. I think you can find it on his facebook page. I will keep scouring the internet for more coverage of the Oconee County event yesterday. I know if Sheriff Berry had his way there would be no political protests at this park, but ultimately I think that is a Board of Commissioners ~ Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department decision, although I do think the Sheriff's Department would have the right to decide if public safety was at issue (which it very much was not at this event) as best I could tell. One elected Oconee County friend ...

Piss poor conditions at Oconee Veterans Park gymnasium

OK, so it was the day after Halloween and with the time change, I am always willing to cut a little slack to the fine folks at the Oconee Parks and Recreation Department. As the fourth grade basketball season starts in earnest tomorrow evening, I took my son up to a familiar haunt for me, and that is the Open Gym session where basically anyone can shoot hoops. Now admittedly not that many people are going to work on their three-point shot at noon on a Sunday, but I was raring to go and wanted to give my son a taste of what big boy basketball is going to be all about. So when we got there the gym was locked tight as a drum and no signs to contradict the previously posted 8 am to 6 pm posting. Maybe there was something online, but I was too damn stubborn to look (not to mention tired too). So we drove around the remnants of Autry Road as there was a very major girls softball tournament going on and that obviously had the attention of the parks and rec staff. We drove all the way to the...

OCRD Picture Day, Punt Pass & Kick and Soccer

The rains we have received lately are a blessing as an inch below the top soil it is still bone dry in our Oconee County soil, but it has taken its toll on our Fall Soccer program with cancellations Thursday already. 2009 Fall Activities

Image
Be patient with parking, access and egress at Oconee Veterans Park and the neighboring Herman C. Michael park tonight and most week nights for the next month and a half or so. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. From: tlathrup@oconee.ga.us To: danmatt@hotmail.com Date: Mon, 14 Sep 2009 11:22:22 -0700 Subject: 2009 Fall Activities Greetings, Receipt of this e-mail indicates you are a parent of one of the approximately 1250 kids involved in one of the seven OCPRD fall 2009 youth programs. We sincerely hope that not only your childrens, but your whole family's experience this season will be rewarding and fun. With such a large number of children and families involved in fall activities it can make for some busy practice and game days often filling our parks to capacity. Add in over 400 kids from Oconee County Little League and the Oconee Futbol League soccer group who also utilize our fields and it is easy to see how gym and field space become quickly limited. Today mar...

Moisture mars Oconee veterans monument | News | OnlineAthens.com

I salute and admire all our Veterans and applaud the efforts of the committee, but this project has been cursed from the onset due to politics lingering from the Jim Ivey embezzlement scandals, poor planning, not taking existing community plans in to even consideration yet alone effect, ignoring significant opposition to the design, not taking into account that black granite gets hot with the Georgia sun on it, not using area grey granite instead and the list goes on and on. I am in no way being disrespectful to our Veterans, but it does not take a soothsayer to see the karma coming full circle and into effect. Health care reform demonstrations come off rather peaceably for the most part

Image
An equal number, as best as any one could county, came out in support and in opposition to President Barack Obama's attempt at Health Care Reform today at Oconee Veterans Park. The crowd estimates were at 150 give or take a dozen, with lots of colorful signs on both sides. State Representative Bob Smith was the only elected official speaking I saw in attendance, and he was gracious in greeting me and my son following Lowell's soccer practice an hour earlier. Former Bogart city council member Woody Bruce did his best karaoke rendition of Lee Greenwood's hit "I'm Proud to be an American" and Bishop city council member Nedra Johnson was spotted in the audience. Many former military members dotted the audience, such as former UGA athletic department employee Tony Cushenberry who somehow came to the conclusion that our President in a Marxist, at least on his sign. Many speeches were delivered, most under four minutes, with raucous applause for those tailoring their...

Let the onslaught commence

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry is a true professional law enforcement provider and is talking to both sides of the aisle before the protests start Saturday morning at Oconee Veterans Park near Watkinsville near what some once labeled the Eastville area of unincorporated Oconee County, Georgia. Berry, an acknowledged Republican, responded quickly to a fax to come to the library a day early at the total fault of this writer, when in fact the Oconee County Democratic Committee is meeting Thursday evening at the Library to make signs for their counter demonstration supporting President Barack Obama's efforts at health care reform. They will appear at the front of the park as to not curry complete confrontation with their conservative counterparts contemplating ways at killing any attempts at health care reform. "Y'all are not the ones I am worried about," quipped Berry to Veit late Wednesday evening. Apparently the Sheriff was going to try to talk with the local GOP le...

OCHS Basketball Camp - change of location MOVED TO OCONEE VETERANS PARK MONDAY, JULY 6

Image
I like the pristine basketball courts in the Oconee Veterans Park' brand spanking new gymnasium facility. They have two cross courts and one full size regulation court with three point lines adorned to all of them, with a good safe clean wooden floor and a track above it all. It shall be interesting to contrast with the North Oconee camp. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Teabaggers run amok again in Oconee County Saturday

Ted Nugent or Lynyrd Skynyrd probably won't be performing, but there is yet another attempt at raising anti-Obama fervor at an AthensTeaParty.com event in Oconee Veterans Park near Watkinsville this Saturday 1-3 pm. I wonder what these folks think about President Obama attempting to close loopholes in offshore investment havens to keep our money home here in the United States of America instead of in various islands with favorable tax rates. I am all for legal means of paying as little taxes as possible, but as usual it is those who cut corners to not pay taxes who hike the rates for the rest of us law abiding citizens.
