For the past seven years, this northeast Georgia district has been represented by U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, whose outspoken conservatism and reputation as a frequent “no” vote earned him national attention. The race to replace him, though, has been anything but a contest to take up his mantle. Tonight the Oconee County Democratic Committee met without me as Chair. I resigned after an email from Congressional chair and former campaign chair for my race for House Patsy Harris of Morgan County seemed particularly incensed at my endorsement of Oglethorpe County attorney Gary Garrard in the Republican Primary for the 10th district Congressional race (after she received a complaint from someone from Morgan County after this endorsement was picked up by the right wing blog Peach Pundit). In this blog I have never let party labels stop me from usually picking the losers as it is generally the kiss of death when an activist Democrat chooses a Republican candidate. Paul Broun at Cracker Barrel continues his obstructionist, un-American attack on those wanting Affordable Health Care
Taking questions from a dozen constituents at an hour long meeting at Cracker Barrel in Oconee County this morning, Dr. Broun decided to have a Clarke County event outside of the county. He was his usual condescending, non-specific answering self. He came off as rude, argumentative, and not the least bit interested in what people had to say if you dared disagree with him. If you asked a specific question, you received a generalized, non-specific political speech in return. He questioned who was using chemical weapons on the children of Syria, and did not seem to think that saving their lives was worth it (but it would have been two years ago). He could not come up with anything at all positive to say about the Affordable Care Act when asked to do so, even when shown that some people actually like it. He was asked about training his staff to help his constituents come to an informed decision, and he decided not to do so.
