Oconee County, GA Politics

Now former Mayor Jeff Thomas of North High Shoals is a man of many cloths, and we wish him well in all his future endeavors. I think he will remain quite busy with his family's nursing home on the edge of the city limits, not to mention his church and family. He was always appropriately entertaining when participating in local politics, wearing red on Valentine's Day, that sort of thing. This process has been several years and multiple personalities ~ some even passed on now for several years ~ whose real estate, living situations, rental properties, hired help, scandals and assorted other skeletons in the closet are much the subject of gossip and whisper campaigns on all three sides of the big bubbling rocks on the Apalachee River at the confluence of Morgan, Walton, and Oconee counties. My best guess was wrong. Watkinsville Mayor Jim Luken will not be seeking re-election (to a fourth term?) and instead supporting the candidacy of current council member and one time Code Enforcement Officer Joe Walter to be the next Mayor of Watkinsville. Go vote today if you live in Oconee County for the SPLOST referendum (essentially another penny on every dollar of purchases in Oconee to help our towns and projects through the unincorporated areas as well) or especially if you are a resident of the municipality of Bogart (which stretches into a tiny portion of Clarke as well) where there is a race between two candidates to replace Mayor Terri Glenn. Those candidates are Janet Jones and Michael Ward and I salute them both for having the nerve to serve as an elected official, a thankless task if there every was one. Just ask David Weeks . Thanks to Adam Thompson for writing the story in today's paper to remind me of this important municipal election in Bogart .
