Abramoff scandal may be hurting Reed's campaign 02/04/06

There is no question about this headline assertion. Even Mr. GOP Jr. Jay Hanley said so much to me in an email no long ago. Reed's campaign is sinking like a stone tossed in a pond. 21 state senators in his own party urged Reed to drop out of the race yesterday. Cagle will probably win the GOP nod. I think Athens own' Michael Thurmond would beat either potential Republican candidate if he was nominated, but I am not so sure about Gregg Hecht or Jim Martina at this early point of the cam OnlineAthens.com | News | Abramoff scandal may be hurting Reed's campaign 02/04/06

An open letter to Governor Sonny Perdue

Dear Governor Perdue: If you are looking to get re-elected, I have a sure fire method to ensure your second term as the Governor of Georgia: veto SB 386. As a University of Georgia alumni, you can surely appreciate the desire of Athens Clarke County residents to want to remain one whole voting district with the district encompassing the University of Georiga community. That would include the counties of Oconee, Oglethorpe and Clarke in one state senate district. As a former Democrat, you know how dangerous it can be to light a fire under the ass of your opponent. Bob Smith gathered the kindling, Brian Kemp poured the gasoline, and Ralph Hudgens has the match. The Athens Arsonist Area Chamber of Commerce is guilty of torching any trust remaining in the Classic City to the point where their members are not renewing their memberships in droves. If you sign 386, you write your own political obituary. Cathy Cox will kick your ass. Mark Taylor will beat you to a bloody pulp at the polls in N...

Bicentennial plans for Oconee County

Image
Watkinsville Bicentennial planning Jan. 31, 2005 Oconee Living Section Athens Banner-Herald Watkinsville prepares for bicentennial celebration By Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Correspondent A couple of dozen Oconee County residents joined all five members of the Watkinsville City Council and the Mayor Jim Luken in plotting, planning and scheming the myriad ways the city can celebrate its 200th birthday this year Tuesday evening. This informal session was a free flowing exchange of ideas and plans. Several separate committees were formed including one for projects, special events, mementos, others and a steering committee to help focus and finalize the creative committees. Council member Samantha Purcell promised to head the projects committee, with some possible planting of a live Christmas tree. Watkinsville resident Kathleen McQuiston suggested planting 200 trees to commemorate the birth of the city once known as Big Springs. Other ideas included an upgrade of the community center, to beau...

House passes Redistricting fiasco

House approves Senate redistricting by Tom Crawford on 1/31/2006 The House of Representatives voted 100-69 Tuesday, largely along party lines, to adopt a bill (SB 386) that redraws the lines of three Senate districts in northeast Georgia. SB 386, which was supported by the Republican majority and opposed by Democrats, now goes to Gov. Sonny Perdue to sign into law. While the bill makes several changes to three adjoining Senate districts, the major impact of SB 386 is to split Democratic-leaning Clarke County between two districts that Republicans want to keep in the GOP column. Democrats have charged that the bill is an attempt to prevent Rep. Jane Kidd (D-Athens) from running for the Senate District 46 seat that Sen. Brian Kemp (R-Athens) is giving up to run for agriculture commissioner. Kemp’s brother-in-law, Republican attorney Bill Cowsert, also plans to run for the vacated seat. “We know what this bill is really about,” said House Minority Leader DuBose Porter (D-Dublin). “It’s ab...
