New Marlow reminder

Marlow noontime press conference at City Hall report

So I just got back from watching a speech by James Marlow outside of the Athens-Clarke County City Hall in lovely downtown Athens. Many Young Democrats held on to signs while Marlow spoke passionately about what he believe will be the best plan for the 10th Congressional District. Marlow was introduced by recently elected A/CC Commissioner Kelly Girtz. A small crowd kept passers-by curious and even a few shouted encouragement to Marlow. Among the people I knew there were former Mayor Gwen O'Looney, Kathy Kirbo and Al Davison. Marlow talked about an honorable end to the Iraqi war and energy independence sometime in the next five to 25 years. I snagged a few more signs to replace the several bent and torn in my yard by the neighborhood juveniles in my yard. If only these impressionable children would realize how much better their short term and long term future would be with a Democrat representing them, then they might reconsider their reprehensible behavior. I stapled and reinfor...

Vote reminder and rides from CC Dems

The special election for the Tenth District Congressperson is underway. You can vote early now through 5 PM on Friday, June 15, at the local Board of Elections office at 155 E. Washington Street. Remember to a photo ID with you regardless of when you vote. Election Day is Tuesday, June 19. Ten candidates are vying for this Congressional seat. Three of the candidates are Democrats – James Marlow, Evita Paschall, and Denise Freeman. The June 19 election is NOT a primary. The top two vote getters will be in the runoff on July 17 unless one candidate receives a majority of the votes. For a Democrat to be in the runoff, a Democratic candidate must be one of the top two vote getters, so it’s extremely important that ALL Democrats VOTE. If you need a ride to the polls, let me know (706-543-7390 or macrawson@charter.net) or contact Linda Lloyd, Director of the Economic Justice Coalition (706-202-0324 or 706-549-9368). MORE GOTV efforts! Our local Democrats have been asked to help with a G...

Reasons to vote against staggered terms

Citizens for Oconee's Future, Inc. P. O. Box 1301 Watkinsville, GA 30677 Following is the text of a message from Lee Becker with information about the vote that is scheduled for June 19th to change the election cycle for our Board of Commissioners from an election of all each 4 years to an election of half each 2 years. This would make it impossible for citizens to make a major change in direction of the Board. I support Mr. Becker's position that this change is not in our best interest. I urge all to vote against this change. Charles Baugh Charlie: Please send this out, if you would. Thanks Lee Oconee County voters who turn out to vote on June 19 for the 10th Congressional race may be surprised to find another issue on the ballot. Voters also will be asked if they want to stagger the terms of the members of the Board of Commissioners, instead of choosing all five members of the Board at the same time, as is now the case. In a given election year, two or three member...

Whitehead's latest blunderspeak

Interesting encounter with Dr. Paul Broun last night at Athens Academy and other assorted thoughts about the latest in the 10th District race

Even though I may not agree with their politics, I like to go and introduce myself to most candidates who won't try to punch my pick-up truck. So last night I saw a relatively youthful looking Dr. Paul Broun in a red polo shirt and straw hat, age 61, at the Athens Academy spring scrimmage football game and BBQ. We argued and turned heads in the relatively small and predominantly Republican crowd about the possibility of a Democrat winning. Dr. Broun told me that Democrats have no chance, and I told him that Democrats do have a chance, especially if 35 Americans a week are getting slaughtered in Iraq through next month. He kind of ushered me away from the paltry crowd so as not to scorch the ears of the nearby Republican elite faithful. To his credit, Dr. Broun was very forthright, honest and compelling in his discussion, claiming various Democrats are going to vote for him. I am sure there are more than a handful of lifelong Democrats in the over 60 crowd locally that remembers ...

Karl Rove may yet go to jail for a long time (borrowed from Truth Out)

Go to Original The Goods on Goodling and the Keys to the Kingdom By Greg Palast BradBlog.com Thursday 24 May 2007 And the no longer "missing" Rove emails revealing the cagey scheme to steal 2008... This Monica revealed something hotter - much hotter - than a stained blue dress. In her opening testimony yesterday before the House Judiciary Committee, Monica Goodling, the blonde-ling underling to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Department of Justice Liaison to the White House, dropped The Big One.... And the Committee members didn't even know it. Goodling testified that Gonzales' Chief of Staff, Kyle Sampson, perjured himself, lying to the committee in earlier testimony. The lie: Sampson denied Monica had told him about Tim Griffin's "involvement in 'caging' voters" in 2004. Huh?? Tim Griffin? "Caging"??? The perplexed committee members hadn't a clue - and asked no substantive questions abou...

10th district Republican race gets ugly here in Watkinsville

This story is too funny for me to even comment on yet, but suffice to say, it speaks volumes about Republican ethics and how they treat each other.

Beer and wine in Oconee County

I went to the Oconee County Board of Commissioners public input forum in Courtroom #1 Tuesday evening and was generally appalled at the scare tactics employed by the opponents to having glasses of beer and wine at restaurants outside of Watkinsville. The vast majority of the people in the back seemed to back the ordinance allowing beer and wine to served with meals at restaurants such as DePalma's and possibly a Loco's. People need to realize that it is expressly against the code of the state of Georgia to have a referendum on beer and wine in restaurants. Beer and wine have been served in Watkinsville for five months with no major problems yet. Yes someone will die from alcohol, whether it is served in Oglethorpe, Oconee or Clarke counties. Yes alcohol is evil, but so are taxes, which are necessary under our current form of government. Development is here, and we have to do the most we can to control it. Beer and wine will pass 3-2 sometime around August is my prediction.
