Field-based tour at federal Agriculture center in Oconee County

I have been in the facility several times to take photos but I think it is something well worth investigating yourself further to find out what exactly goes on in this important research location across from the Oconee County Campus of Gainesville State College. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Subject: [oconee] Field-based tour at federal Ag center   I hope you will consider putting this on your calendar -- a unique opportunity on October 23rd to tour the prestigious federal agriculture facility and field sites in Oconee.   I think opportunities like this can deepen our sense of place as we get a first-hand look at the land and institutions around us.   This is the center whose funding is in jeopardy. The Senate Appropriations Committee gave them a short reprieve, as I describe below in the press release.   The Oconee Democrats are the sponsors of the tour, which is part of our monthly issues forums that are free and non-partisan. More from the Freedom Riders reuniting in Greene County registering voters for Obama

Subject: Re: Hey guys Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2008 16:13:05 +0000 Natasha, Here are 3 more .jpg shots from the event.  In the Event desription on mybo, my last sentence was, "Come and stand with us on 'the shoulders of the Freedom Riders' as we register citizens in Greene Co., Georgia!"  When Margaret Leonard saw that, she picked up her phone and called me from Florida.  She described herself as "ancient" and has difficulty walking and wanted to know if she would be welcome at the event.  After encouraging her to come, she told me she was a Freedom Rider from the sixties and said, "I have a mug shot to prove it."  Margaret Leonard was 19 yrs. old in 1961 when she was arrested/jailed with other Freedom Riders.  Her mother was worried about her and phoned the jail frequently to make sure they knew she was monitoring the situation to ensure she was treated properly. The title of the book Margaret is hol...

Joe Walter holding gathering at yarn shop Sunday

Image
Next Sunday at 5 pm Watkinsville City Council member Joe Walter will be hosting an informal gathering of supporters and curious residents of the municipality seeking information about his contested re-election bid against Luke Bishop at the Yarn Shop on Barnett Shoals Road across from the industrial areas of LAD Truck Line and Southwire in the wonderfully restored barn built back by Quinton Phillips and his wife Cindy Jerrell. Joe brought by one of his second generation yard signs Saturday to tell me about it. I think I saw Luke and gave him one of those all-knowing nods as a traversed the Main Street - Simonton Bridge/Whitehall Road gauntlet toward my abode in the rare non soccer Saturday.

Voter Registration Event with Freedom Riders in Greene County... A SUCCESS!!!

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Today's VR Event in Greene Co... A SUCCESS!!! Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2008 18:07:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Hi, All.   We had an amazing day with voter registration in Greene Co. today.  The amazement was not only that 50+ volunteers registered 135 new voters.  It was also in the make-up of the teams we had working in the predominately black neighborhoods and businesses in Greene County.  In most instances, the teams were biracial teams united in the common cause of getting a biracial candidate elected President of the USA.  Another piece of the amazement was Eris Gaul who was registering folks at the Galaxy grocery store in Union Point.  By lunch-time, Eris had already registered 15 people and was out of forms.  As of this writing, I don't know what her total was for the day, but I think she probably g...

Debate will proceed with McCain, Obama tonight

The debate commences at 9 pm Eastern time.

Debunk McCain's debate exit strategy

Subject: Tell McCain and Obama: We need a real debate on the economy. Dear Friend, John McCain thinks we don't need a presidential debate on Friday night. We disagree. We need a real debate on the economy, and we need it now. The presidential candidates should hold their debate Friday as scheduled, and address the proposed $700 billion Wall Street bailout. We've been hearing a lot this week about how our economy is in a crisis - maybe the worst crisis since the Great Depression. Politicians on the left and the right have made all kinds of claims about exactly how much or little we should panic and what that means for the policies we should enact. We reject the notion that canceling the debate is the best way to focus on the economy. We have a monumental decision to make this November, and we deserve a robust conversation on the defining issues of our time. I just signed a petition calling on Senators McCain and Obama to debate economic issues this Friday -- I hope you will too....

Tonight at the Taco Stand

I could somehow not remember Scott Howard's last name while telling manager and good buddy Mark Marchand behind the counter about Larry Munson retiring (the guy behind in line with the son looking eerily like Mark's eight year old Jalen reminded me). But I got my usual two Tilapia tacos to go and on the way out, after a long line had surfaced, a much littler boy who has just been playing soccer was instead blowing in and out of a just small enough plastic bags covering just a little too much of his face for most folks comfort, seems I was only one checking him out at the critical juncture. Mom was at the front of the line maybe 15 feet away blindsided by the line of people oddly behind her (usually the line snakes to the left side). So in a split second I decided I was justified on raining on this maybe six year old's parade and used my scariest grown up voice to very sternly and loudly yanked the plastic sack away and say NO, fully looking for his mom. She mouthed thank y...
